  1. And we would win a couple Super Bowls.

    Not with that roster.

That was Coughlin's greatest attribute as a coach - the ability to get the most out of his roster and it's what I most miss with this regime. TC was fired after losing a lot of close games at the gun his last season (or two)....but too many people, here and in the front office (who caved to fan pressure), overlooked the fact that TC made the Giants competitive against good NFL teams without the benefit of an NFL caliber roster - especially defensively. If he had been the beneficiary of Reese's defensive free agent shopping spree, we would have made a run at another Super Bowl. No doubt in my mind.

And lets remember, in one of the Super Bowl seasons, the Giants were LAST in the NFL in rushing....and still found a way to win. TC knew how to overcome weaknesses and adversity - winning post season games,on the road, as underdogs, all the way to the Super Bowl. Twice.

I'm usually a patient, "give the coach a chance" sort of loyalist.......but I haven't seen any indication that our current coach has the ability to work around weaknesses and make the team greater than the sum of their parts, as TC did.....and I have to admit, I'm getting a little worried that he may be out of his depth.

  2. You're right, of course. I'm cautiously optimistic but I just fear that they are on course for another first round playoff bouncing, if they can't score in the red zone, run the football, and block...things that plagued them last year that I don't think were entirely addressed. Marshall and Engram will hopefully help in the red zone, theoretically.A

    .

In my 50+ years of being a maniacal Giant fan, I have never entered a season more than "cautiously optimistic.".

  3. My takeaways - the Jets are on the clock. Defensive front is their best unit, though, so this was a legitimate test for the OL and they showed improvement. Giant D vs Jet O was a classic mismatch. Nugent making it a closer competition than I hoped for. All those missed extra points last year still scare me. Rooting for the kid.

  4. You're right, Direct TV still has the exclusive rights to broadcasting every game. That $99 on NFL.com is only preseason games and regular season replays.....and I just canceled, so I got last night's game free.

Direct TV, for all the games and Red Zone, is now $62.50 a month for 6 months - $375, a $15 increase over last year. However, the customer service rep found me a "loyalty discount", since I've been a customer for two years and knocked off $10 a month, so that brings it down to $315. Still a sh*tload of $$ but I'm addicted to the NFL. I have no choice!

  5. First game thread I ever started - and didn't even mean to! Was able to see the game on NFL Game Pass. They offer a free 7 day trial, so signed up, patched my laptop to the big screen and viola! Saw the game in perfect HD! I can cancel today and it won't cost me a dime!

But at $99 for the year, that's not a bad deal, compared to $360 for Direct TV Season Ticket.....but then again, DTV gives me Red Zone and it's much easier switching between games....and I have two TVs going on NFL Sundays. I'd miss that second screen. Decisions, decisions......

  6.

No doubt JR has tried (in previous years) to put together an OL. It just hasn't panned out. Flowers, unless he pulls it together this season, looks to be a bust. Jerry is not a starting caliber RG, unless he's surrounded by four above average lineman. Richburg is underwhelming, and Hart is nothing more than a backup himself. The only competent lineman we have in the starting lineup is Pugh, who's a B+ level guard.

We have a C- level line, on average:

    LT Flowers - D

    LG Pugh - B+

    Richburg - C

    Jerry - C-

    Hart - D

Further illustration that OT's are tough to come by and even mediocre ones are expensive:

Bears signed LT Charles Leno to a four-year, $38 million extension through 2021.

A 2014 seventh-round pick, Leno has started 29-of-32 games the past two seasons. He was Pro Football Focus' No. 53 tackle out of 76 qualifiers last season after checking in at 49th-of-76 the previous year. The Bears see upside in the soon-to-be 26-year-old and are returning all five starters up front. At $9.5 million per year, Leno is the league's 14th-highest-paid left tackle.
  7. I can't kill JR for not trying to build the OL. We have two first rounders and a two on that line. You want to say he whiffed on those picks - or at least Flowers - OK, that may be a fair argument......though I'm gonna give it a little longer before making that declaration. But the argument that he's fiddled while the OL burned is not a fair one. As for free agents this year, they were average to below average and they grossly, ridiculously overpaid. To give up two 23 year old OTs, who you've invested draft choices and two years of development time in, and who have worked hard all off-season, to sign mediocre, overpriced journeymen would not have been prudent.

  8. I don't know I'm pretty excited. Collins was making every play. Jerell Adams looked awesome blocking and receiving. Engram blocked very well. We have a shit load of d-line depth. Goodson made plays. Hart looked much improved. In fact we successfully ran to the right a few times which was nice. The new guy made a 50+ yard fg. And geno honestly looked like an above average backup who made one awful play. All you're really looking for in these games is individual play from select players

I generally agree. Not sure the OL depth translates to OL quality but it did look like the TE's blocking might make a difference in the running game. Goodson was good for first start - had some hits and also a few whiffs, which is to be expected. And yeah, right up until that INT, I was blown away by how good Gino looked. But maybe that was in comparison to Josh Johnson, who simply doesn't look like an NFL QB.

  9. Also read somewhere that there are a few offensive players grumbling that he plays right on the edge and occasionally crosses the line on how physical you're supposed to play in practice. Looking forward to seeing this kid in the preseason games.....and hopefully beyond.
