Source: Giants Cut Tight End Jerome Cunningham, Add CB Brandon McGee

The New York Giants have cut tight end Jerome Cunningham, who impressed during summer training camp, according to a league source who requested anonymity.

Cunningham, 6-3, 250 pounds out of Southern Connecticut State, was on the Giants’ practice squad last season. He had an impressive preseason, catching four passes for 91 yards and a touchdown in limited snaps, a showing that was good enough to convince the team to move on from Adrien Robinson.

In the regular season, things went south for Cunningham. He was inactive for the Week 1 game at Dallas, but then was in the lineup in Week 2 against Atlanta after Daniel Fells was forced to miss that game with a foot injury.

Cunningham would then suffer a knee injury that kept him out of the Washington and Buffalo games; last week, despite being listed as Probable on the Giants injury report, Cunningham was scratched.

The final nail in Cunningham’s coffin appeared to be the emergence of Will Tye, signed from the team’s practice squad two weeks ago. Tye jumped ahead of Cunningham on the depth chart, and has four receptions for 48 yards in two games.

Cunningham finished his brief stint with the Giants having caught one pass for three yards.

The corresponding roster move appears to be cornerback Brandon McGee, who was signed to the team’s practice squad earlier this week and whose tweet appears to confirm his addition to the 53-man roster.

McGee, 5-11, 193 pounds, was a fifth-round draft pick by the Rams out of Miami, Fla. He’s played 17 games in two seasons for St. Louis, including two this year. He has 18 tackles

The Giants are hurting at cornerback right now. They will be without cornerback Prince Amukamara for at least two weeks, if not more.

They are also hoping that Trumaine McBride, limited this week in practice due to a groin injury, will be good to go. If he’s not, New York is seeking to protect themselves against being caught short-handed at the position.

The Giants, who will face the Eagles on Monday night, have not yet announced the moves official, but were expected to do so by the end of the day.
