A few months ago, the Vikings sent the Giants a quarterback. Now, they’re taking one back.

Rhett Bomar, who has spent the past two seasons as a member of the team’s practice squad, is on his way to Minnesota to sign with the Vikings, according to someone who spoke to Bomar today. The person requested anonymity because the transaction had not been officially announced by either team.

Bomar, the Giants' fifth-round pick in 2009, completed 40-of-77 passes for 545 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions this preseason after Jim Sorgi was lost with a shoulder injury, but it obviously wasn’t enough for the Giants to make him the backup to Eli Manning. The team traded for Sage Rosenfels and kept Bomar as a member of their practice squad. The Giants haven’t carried three quarterbacks since the 2007 season.

That Bomar would end up in Minnesota is interesting for a number of reasons. For one, the Giants' acquisition of Rosenfels from the Vikings before the season likely pushed Bomar to Minnesota. Secondly, Bomar’s idol is Brett Favre, the injured Vikings starter. And thirdly, Bomar was active for only one game as a Giant -- Week 17 last season at Minnesota.
