YANKEES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 5 at Phoenix

Friday, March 31

Yankees at the plate: New York's first run of the game came when Bernie Williams scored from third on Kevin Jarvis' errant pickoff throw to first in the third inning. Derek Jeter drove in a run in the fifth with a single to right. Gary Sheffield was robbed of a hit when shortstop Craig Counsell made a diving backhanded stop and fired to first just in time. Kelly Stinnett's first home run of the spring came in the ninth off Jose Valverde.

D-Backs at the plate: Chad Tracy's line drive to right in the third got Orlando Hudson doubled off at first base, but scored Counsell from third. Tracy also picked up an RBI in the fifth with a single to left. Shawn Green missed out on a pair of RBIs when Bubba Crosby dove and caught his sinking line drive in center in the fifth.

Yankees on the mound: Starter Chien-Ming Wang lived dangerously, allowing eight baserunners through the first three innings. The first four hitters against reliever Kyle Farnsworth reached base.

D-Backs on the mound: Jarvis, who had earlier been assigned to Minor League camp, started for Arizona. Reliever Jason Grimsley has pitched well of late, and it was more of the same as he retired all four batters he faced.

Up next: The Diamondbacks and Yankees face off again at 3:10 p.m. ET on Saturday at Chase Field in the final tuneup for both teams. Shawn Chacon will get the start for the Yankees against Miguel Batista.
