Possible Eli Backup? Giants Will Meet With QB Fiedler

jay-fiedler-falcons.jpgThe Giants interest in Jay Fiedler has become an annual thing. Each of the last two offseasons they've had a bit of interest in him but nothing ever materialized. Maybe the third time will be a charm. According to KFFL, citing John Murphy of Yahoo Sports, the Giants will meet with the free agent quarterback in the near future.

John Murphy, of Yahoo! Sports, reports unrestricted free-agent QB Jay Fiedler (Buccaneers) will work out for the New York Giants, according to his agent, Brian Levy.

One thing the Giants have been lacking in recent years was an experienced veteran quarterback to tutor Eli Manning. Instead they've had guys like Jared Lorenzen and Tim Hasselbeck behind him; neither have seen the field more than Eli.

Fiedler is familiar with Giants Stadium, the pressures of New York and the NFL. If they could finally lock him up, it'd be a very solid and very smart move.

makes sense to me...nothing bad could come out of this and Eli needs a guy behind him that can teach him instead of the other way around

  2. Sometimes "smart" gets misconstrued as "cheap". This FA period has been very frustrating because the Giants haven't done much, but when you step back and realize how much money some of these average at best players are getting, well... you get the picture.

I know this will sound a little far fetched to some, but the New England Patriots NEVER overspend on anyone, and look where it's gotten them. You have to start somewhere.

I guess that's true, but I would like to get a proven guy so we don't have to rely on the draft which is so unpredictable. IF we pay too much for one guy I don't think it's a big deal as long as we don't go nuts.

  3. If there is one positive that can be taken out of not signing a running back it could be that as Brandon Jacobs put it we won't have to pay someone 20 million dollars to sit on the bench. It shows a lot of faith In Jacobs and this could actually be a good thing. We'll probably draft someone in the late first or early second day to compliment him while not taking up too much cap room.
