Free Safety Situation

Brent Alexander retired today, and that leaves us short a very solid safety who was our best Interceptor

without him, our INTs should drop a bit...

SOOOOooo....What can we do?

On the roster we have...James Butler

now call me crazy, but even though Butler played well at times when he played last year, I still am not sold on him and would like to do better.

The agressive high pay off, high risk option is...

Jason Allen: The guy would have been a top 15 pick had he come out last year. He missed the whole year due to a knee injury, but when healthy he is a absolute ball-hawk, he is also very athletic, and can play CB, FS, and SS...so versatility is always nice as well...

--------------------

A couple of lousy and stupid ways to fill the need would to sign...

Tank Williams: He is young, can hit, one problem...he is SS and Gibril is not a good cover guy so him at FS is an option, but he is better off at SS, and having two Safetys who are below average in coverage is not a great move.

Adam Archulata: See above  ...only Tank would be better

-----------------

A risky move is...

Chris Hope: He played very well in Pittsburgh, he can tackle and is decnt in coverage, he can play SS or FS very effectively, but I am almost 100% sure that he is a product of the system, and he would not do as well here.

--------------------

A safe bet is...

Omar Stoutmire: He is very durable (excluding that knee injury 2 years ago) he is a outstanding hitter, he will come cheap, he has played here before, is fair in coverage...but will get next to 0 INTs...so he is solid, but is not much of a playmaker at all.

So please give me your thoughts on the FS situation...

Chris Hope of the Steelers. He played under Lewis and had an excellent season last year. I think he would be our best bet.

Ya he would be a good pickup...but in terms of money, he will cost a good chunk of change...probually around 12-17 million

and I think that Jason Allen would be a great player....but the question I have is, will he be there in round 2 for us?

I personally would trade down and take Jason Allen...and Abdul Hodge with our pcik in round 2

but back to the Safety situation...Take Allen and sign Stoutmire to a 1year deal incase Allen shows up completely Raw....

That is what i suggested in the second round in the first i like D'Qwell Jackson

i think Jason Allen will really help the secondary also if injuries happen Butler in a S and him to CB a think a very solid pick at 56

If you want Abdoul Hodge go KO Simpson S from South Carolina in the First and take Hodge second not a bad sitiuation only turn down about KO is he only played 2 years but tremendous upside

I've heard that as of now, it is Butler's job to lose for FS. And I am not content going into the season with that. So I think that may be our biggest need. At least we have somewhat potential in Webster and Deloatch so CB goes behind safety.

I would prefer to see the Giants bring in a veteran and a rookie. I still like the sound of Schulters and Whitner. Corey Chavous is another intriguing veteran, and there are a lot of likeable safeties in the draft.

I think Butler has earned a shot, but I'm not convinced he is the long-term answer at the position. Competition never hurts.

I agree with the Vet and Rookie arrangement...

although I would prefer Stoutmire and Jason Allen

Stoutmire has played here, know the system...and Allen will provide a ball-hawk that will make up for the lack of INT's from the CB's...

Why would we bring back Stout after cutting him last year? What has he done in the past year to suggest guys like Schulters, Chavous, McCree, and Clark would be lesser options?

Chavous is another option, as is Schulters

but Stoutmire should come the cheapest...and I have always liked him, he seems to be a good guy, plays hard, and can deliver some punishment.

Besides if we drafted Allen, Im sure he'd start.

With the exception of maybe Chavous, I would expect all of those guys to sign a contract at or near the vet minimum. I don't think the money saved on Stout can justify the fact that the others are clearly better football players. And younger.

You make a good point...

McCree will probually not go for a vet minimum though

He is coming of a good year...

I am not a huge "stat" guy...but I will admit, I just looked at there statistics and McCree and Chavous definately have a pretty bug edge over Omar's

so I guessI was wrong into thinking Omar is the guy that I want...now I am leaning toward McCree and Chavous

I would definately look into McCree preferabley...He seems like he is good in coverage according to the scouting report I just read, and coverage is really what I am focused on at FS for now..since Gibril is not to good in coverage.

I do not know what EA is planning this month...but I just hope he drafts a Safety who has good coverage skills, early on.

If the Giants sign Chris Hope or even Ryan Clark or Tank Williams (thereby moving Gibril to FS), I doubt safety will remain a high priority on draft day. I would prefer the Giants look for a short-term solution in free agency and long-term solution in the draft, but I would not be heartbroken if they went for Hope or Williams.

That is exactly what I want as well...sign a vet for the short term, and draft the guy for the future that I think can be a very nice player for years in Jason Allen.

I like the idea of moving Gibril to FS. He is not big enough as a SS and most of his production (rookie year) came at the FS spot.

I'd only do it if the Giants got a really good SS (i.e. someone better than Gibril), which is why I brought up Tank Williams (who I like a lot as a player ... great in run support and the type of "intimidator" that Pierce said the secondary has been lacking). Otherwise, I'd prefer to keep Gibril in place and let him continue to develop. He was guilty of quite a few mental mistakes last season, so I'm not sure if burdening him with a position change will be beneficial. Plus, he has a tendency to whiff on a lot of arm tackles, which is not a good quality for the FS ... often the last player between the opponent and the goal line...

What do you think of guys like Greg Blue and Dwayne Slay. I'm just curious because I hear mixed opinions about them and haven't had the time to really get info on these guys (fucking mid-terms :furious: )

IMO, this is the best route to go. Draft a FS in the 3rd or 4th round and let Butler and the Rook compete for the starting job. Butler will win it, but if he struggles, there will be a young player to take his spot. They will push each other every practice trying to win/hold onto the FS spot. Come playoff time, one of them should have emerged as a solid FS for us.

This way we can use our cap space to address other issues: DT, WR, CB etc...

Didn't Tim Lewis (or Tom Coughlin) say in the Giants defensive scheme that the difference between FS and SS is irrelevant and really there are just two "safeties" on the field.

Gibril has be utilized as both a FS and SS.

Lewis has acknolwedged that the safeties are interchangeable, however, Gibril typically lined up over top of the TE (except when we went dime, in which case he covered the slot WR) and played closer to the LOS than Alexander. There isn't much difference in their responsibilites, but there is a difference in where they line up.

What makes you big enough to be SS? Do you have any evidence that a certain physical figure is not big enough to be SS? I mean from a credible or respectable source?

I can name couple of SS that are Wilsons size or even smaller... one name rings a bell. I think he plays Strong Safety for the Baltimore Ravens. ;)

SS for the Bears & 49ers. ;)
