The Game...

Mike Piazza and Mike Cameron return to Shea as the Mets (66-44) take on the NL West leading Padres (58-53) tonight, starting at 7:10 pm EDT...

The Pitchers...

RHP Steve Trachsel (10-5, 5.12 ERA) takes the hill for the Mets...Trachsel earned a win against the Marlins last week after allowing three runs and seven hits in 5.2 IP...On April 20th at San Diego, Trachsel allowed two runs and six hits through 6 IP as part of a no decision...Trachsel is 6-8 with a 5.44 ERA in 17 career appearances against the Padres...Trachsel is 3-2 with a 5.71 ERA at home this season...Mike Piazza is 9-for-37 (.243) with 2 HR and 6 RBI against Trachsel in his career...

RHP Woody Williams (4-3, 3.84 ERA) pitches for the Padres...In a 7-1 loss to the Astros last week, Williams allowed five runs and six hits in 6.2 IP...He is winless in his last four starts...Williams was on the disabled list from May 13 to July 1 because of a torn left calf muscle...Williams is 5-2 with a 4.64 ERA in 13 starts against the Mets...Carlos Beltran is 2-for-17 (.118) with one HR and four RBI in his career against Williams...

The Numbers...

The Mets and Padres split an April four-game series earlier this season...

The Mets are 32-22 at Shea Stadium this season...

Mike Piazza is 2-for-10 with one HR and two RBI against Mets pitching this season...

Since July 1st, Paul Lo Duca is 43-for-100 (.430) with nine doubles, 13 RBI and 19 runs -- his batting average is the highest of any MLB player during that time (even higher than some guy named utley)...

Jose Reyes' grand slam against the Phillies on Sunday was the team's eighth of the season -- the slam tied the team record set in 1999 which was also matched by the 2000 squad (can you say playoffs)...

Martinez tries to lead Mets to fourth straight win

San Diego (58-54) at NY Mets (67-44) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Behind Pedro Martinez, the New York Mets aim for a fourth straight victory in the middle contest of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

Martinez (8-4, 3.48 ERA) owns a 9-3 record with a 3.04 ERA in 22 appearances - 15 starts - against the Padres. This will be his first outing against them this season as he goes for his second straight win.

The Dominican righthander failed to get a decision in his latest outing, a 4-1 setback to Florida on last Thursday. Martinez struck out nine without a walk in six effective innings, yielding just one run and four hits.

The Mets posted a 3-2 triumph in Tuesday's opener for their third win in a row. David Wright, who had three hits, delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth.

San Diego is in danger of falling out of first place in the National League West Division standings. Los Angeles (58-55), which is on an 11-game tear, is just a half-game back.

Clay Hensley (7-8, 4.33) will try to help the Padres maintain their slight edge in the NL West. He won his previous decision, a 5-2 triumph over Houston on last Thursday, after giving up just one run and four hits in 5 2/3 frames.

Hensley looks to make it two in a row against New York this year. He gave up four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings but got the win in a 7-4 triumph on April 23.

CURTAIN CALL FOR PIAZZA'S HOMER!!! lol

4-1 Mets

Awesome! I'm so happy he homered and the fans wanted a curtain call. Piazza was nothing but classy during his time here. I hope he hits another one tonight. As long as the Mets are winning 12-1 at that point. :TU:

Here's to you, Mike!!! Thanks for memories!! :worshippy:
