Plax 4 Prez
Martinez tries to lead Mets to fourth straight win San Diego (58-54) at NY Mets (67-44) 7:10 pm EDT FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Behind Pedro Martinez, the New York Mets aim for a fourth straight victory in the middle contest of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. Martinez (8-4, 3.48 ERA) owns a 9-3 record with a 3.04 ERA in 22 appearances - 15 starts - against the Padres. This will be his first outing against them this season as he goes for his second straight win. The Dominican righthander failed to get a decision in his latest outing, a 4-1 setback to Florida on last Thursday. Martinez struck out nine without a walk in six effective innings, yielding just one run and four hits. The Mets posted a 3-2 triumph in Tuesday's opener for their third win in a row. David Wright, who had three hits, delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth. San Diego is in danger of falling out of first place in the National League West Division standings. Los Angeles (58-55), which is on an 11-game tear, is just a half-game back. Clay Hensley (7-8, 4.33) will try to help the Padres maintain their slight edge in the NL West. He won his previous decision, a 5-2 triumph over Houston on last Thursday, after giving up just one run and four hits in 5 2/3 frames. Hensley looks to make it two in a row against New York this year. He gave up four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings but got the win in a 7-4 triumph on April 23.
