NeMesiS Posted July 16, 2006 Share Posted July 16, 2006 Yankees.mlb.com Rivera notches save No. 400 07/16/2006 4:12 PM ET By Ryan Mink / MLB.com NEW YORK -- Mariano Rivera became just the fourth reliever in Major League baseball history to record 400 saves in his career when he nailed down a two-inning save Sunday against the White Sox. Rivera is the all-time American League saves leader. Only Lee Smith (478), Trevor Hoffman (460) and John Franco (424) have more saves than Rivera. Rivera averaged 41 saves from 1997-2005 and now has 21 this season. Rivera's 34 postseason saves are the most in Major League history. The eight-time All-Star was named the World Series MVP in 1999 and American League Championship Series MVP in 2003. Rivera led the AL in saves three years (1999, 2001, 2004) and won the AL Rolaids Relief Man Award in all three of those years and 2005. The milestone save certainly didn't come easy. Rivera, called on to make his second two-inning save of the season, came into the eighth inning with no outs and runners on first and second and the Yankees ahead by two runs. He got Juan Uribe to pop out to second base then induced a double play from Scott Podsednik. The ninth inning was a little more rocky as Tadahito Iguchi led the inning off with a double and Jim Thome walked.
