Sephiroth
Dude said the same thing about Judge. Fired him two weeks later. Before that he said the same about McAdoo. Fired him (in season) three weeks later. This means nothing.

BronxRik
From NFL.com: Giants owner John Mara does not anticipate making coaching, GM changes after 2024 season New York Giants owner John Mara said Wednesday that he does not anticipate making head coaching or general manager changes following the 2024 season, NFL Network's Judy Battista reported. Speaking at a screening of the new NFL Films piece "The Duke: The Giant Life of Wellington Mara," Mara remarked that his father preached patience, which is part of the reason why he does not anticipate moving on from Giants HC Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen despite his disappointment with New York's 2-5 start, according to Battista. Mara added that he believes he has not been patient enough in recent years and remains confident in Daboll and Schoen, who forged a playoff appearance and a wild-card win in their first season together in 2022, per Battista. The Giants' recent decline began in 2023, a hampered 6-11 campaign that saw Daniel Jones suffer an ACL tear in Week 8, limiting him to just six games total as the quarterback also dealt with a neck injury prior to the season-ender. It was Jones' first season after the Giants inked the former No. 6 overall pick to a four-year, $160 million contract. Jones returned in 2024 fully healthy, but the Giants' offensive woes have persisted. Through seven games with Jones at the helm, New York's offense owns per-game averages which all rank in the bottom third of the NFL, producing 290.7 yards of total offense (28th), 189.1 passing yards (23rd), 101.6 rushing yards (25th) and 14.1 points (31st). Jones has 1,442 passing yards (62.5 completion percentage) with six touchdowns and four interceptions so far in his sixth season. Mara declined to speak on Jones Wednesday, adding that he is focused on Daboll and Schoen, per Battista. Mara's words on Wednesday come three days after New York's troubling 28-3 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles at home, which saw former Giants running back Saquon Barkley thrive with 176 rushing yards and a touchdown in his first game back at MetLife Stadium. Barkley left the Giants via free agency following a public contract negotiation that was featured in Hard Knocks' first-ever offseason offering this past summer. Within that drama, Mara said on the program that he'd "have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia" before the fan favorite signed with the Eagles. There have been some positives in New York despite the lack of success the past two seasons, most recently being the selection of wide receiver Malik Nabers in the first round of the 2024 draft. The Giants also have the necessary pieces for success, most notably on defense, with defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and pass rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns, the latter of whom was acquired this past offseason via trade. Still, there's been little fanfare surrounding the Giants, who have yet to win a home game in a year where the club is celebrating its 100th season. Mara on Wednesday gave Daboll and Schoen a vote of confidence with the hope his patience will soon pay off.
mastershake
Schoen (and to an extent Daboll) really must be doing a great job of posturing to ownership: "Look, we never really wanted Daniel Jones in the first place. Just give us a chance to bring in our guy." And really, it's a good hand to play, if you're in Schoen's position and need to deflect from the rest of your incompetence as a GM. It just might buy you more time with the org.

Well that is the kiss of death for me. I think their days are done and better look out for positions in Buffalo.

Schoen followed orders and rewarded Mr. Duke after defeating a flawed Minnesota team. To me it is 50/50 right now.
BlueInCanada
Ever since the "we didn't sign OBJ to trade OBJ" comment, everything Mara has said has been full of shit.
Mr. P
You can’t just not blame the GM who signed Jones to that contract. just following orders and doing that is also a fireable offense.

BlueInCanada
Also if he's serious about this, it's pretty much a "Schoen and Dabs are drafting their QB" message. Let's hope it's a Nabers pick and not a Neal pick.

As long as Dabs doesnt QB sneak on second and third down, Mara probably sticks with this decision. At the same time if we lose every game by 40 points the rest of the year I can see Mara doing a 180 at a 3-14 season.
mastershake
Related: For the fun of it, I was digging into the stats on the giants 2018-2019 season. Am I crazy, or what Pat Shurmer actually a half decent offensive coach, and not that bad of a head coach? Our points per game ranked 16th and 18th in the league respectively, which isn't bad considering we had a garbage O-line and a transition at the QB position with a rookie QB in 2019. It's not Shurmer's fault Reese destroyed the team over the preceding years, and Gettleman was also sub-par. (Defense ranked 23rd and 30th respectively). I also think given the context of a) turning over a roster with a new GM, b) a declining Eli, and c) transitioning to a rookie QB, he definitely should have gotten more time considering the circumstances. It's also not his fault the OL was trash.

Good coordinator but he lost that team and it wasn't like it wasn't the president he coached the same way in Cleveland (and his subsequent lack of job offers) I would of loved to keep him as OC but he coached two teams that couldn't crack more than 5 wins a season as HC, that's not just bad luck or GMs.

boohyah
I said this a while back, they aren't going anywhere. Jones will go at the end of the season and it's a fresh start then. Daboll is having a better year coaching and Schoen had a good draft. They also have done a lot to bring this club up to speed in terms of making it run like a fucking professional club as opposed to the tired old methods. Giants 2024 Draft Class ranks as the No.1 in the league BTW - thats a huge plus for Schoen and Daboll
