Herc
But i have questions when a player is asking for a retired number
Mr. P
I blame the organization more than him, but I don’t like it either. Especially when it’s the first number ever to be retired in pro football.
BlueInCanada
In this thread. A bunch of dudes. Settle down dudes. He did the right thing and actually asked for the # not like he just demanded it. I'm sure if they said no he would of been onto another. Not to mention the Giants gave him the ok.
BlueInCanada
Apparently this isn't the first time in Giants history either. When YA came over they unretired #14 for him.
BlueInCanada
Actually it's happened twice lol Ward Cuff? Also had #14 unretired as well. Fucking special #14 apparently.

Herc
Yeah but like before you found out it was cool, you’d go to the team and be like “can you guys unretire that number and give it to me?”

Why not? lol He approached the Giants/Mara/Flaherty family and asked for permission. Not like he said "I ain't playing a fucking down unless I get this number"

jranieli
If the family seems okay with it, then I am too. As long as they don’t ever unretire 10, 11, 92.
Sephiroth
Lame move by Nabers. You have to respect the tradition of the game and the players who came before you, not to mention the hundreds of other college stars that didn't get the number they wanted. Iceman_NYG
Guy had 620 yrds receiving his entire career - fuck that shit - Nabers got the Flaherty family's OK - he didnt demand it, he just requested and the family agreed. Settle down

Virginia Giant
I mean what’s the family gonna say, no? i do think it’s more on the giants than Nabers though. You can’t expect someone that young to really understand the nuance of things. The giants slots have used it as an opportunity to be like, hey man, here’s the history of this and here’s why it isn’t in the best taste to make the request. but also, you see this from time to time. Could be the giants are trying to reset themselves, start fresh from recent history and all that. my biggest thing is I generally don’t like the number 1. I think players would do well to not even consider numbers below 3. Too many connotations and expectations and subliminal messages with 1 and 2. Herc
His age is a fair point-maybe I’m putting too much character stock in this ask considering his age. I see stuff like this at work with some of the younger employees and I’m just like “look at the balls on this kid/i never would’ve dared/this is going to be a high-maintenance employee/etc”. I def feel like 22 year old me who laughed at Mike Francesa and co freaking out over shockey is laughing at me now and I don’t know who is right lol
BlueInCanada
I just think of it as, the number was retired long ago, maybe the family wants to see the number come back. In a way not only does it make a great WR number but it also honours Pat's memory in away seeing it out in the field again. I mean honestly if the family is fine with it. My only thing is if Nabers was stomping his feet throwing a hissy fit over it then I'd agree this is poor taste. But to some of these guys their # is who they are. Nabers wants to share it with Giant greatness then so be it.

Settle down True...but in Flaherty's time I got to say.... he was the shit. I had to look him up He got those 600 yards on only 41 catches...(15 yards avg) ..half of which (20) he took to the house...and did it in the early 1930s. Dude was a 7x First Team All Pro.....and played both ways. Football was basically rugby before guys like him came along. But this isn't on Nabers at all - he did this the right way.... and the family is probably digging it big time because people are talking about Ray Flathery for the first time in decades and looking him up (like I did). Its almost like a tribute to the guy. I think the retiring of numbers is getting a bit out of control....I mean the Yankees are going to be issuing guys numbers in the 100s in the next 40 years at the rate they are going. I am an old guy and a traditionalist and this doesnt bother me at all....on a scale of 1 to fake turf...this isnt a .05. C. Wagon

Mr. P
I’m gonna raise my son knowing LT was the greatest to ever play the game, and he may one day watch them unretire 56 to give it to some unproven rookie.

And someone else wearing #56 (if it ever happens) does what to tarnish his legacy? I'd assume the blow and underaged girls is worse to his reputation than someone wearing #56 again. BlueInCanada
Also let's not gloss over the fact this all sets up Arch Manning to wear #10 in two years.

Great analysis... also we need to get away from number related superstitions... my cousin's house near to where the Sportswrath guys picked me up on Macon St in Brooklyn, well my cousin lived three blocks over on Jefferson St. Her house was specifically numbered 667 Jefferson when it should have been 666 Jefferson. No African American person even if they are an atheist or non religious would ever have that number on their house. For Feng Shui anything with a number 4 in it is bad. That’s probably fair. I may be a little more irked if it was someone I had a real connection to. It just all depends. A lot of young pitchers came up and wrote 34 because of Nolan Ryan. Kerry wood comes to mind. I thought that was really cool (as a Nolan Ryan fan). Hard to say how I would have felt if he wore it for the rangers, but I think I’d still have thought it was cool. But there is more direct respect being paid to the owner of that number in that situation. yeah I guess it’s situational. If someone comes up with awesome talent, wants to honor the legacy of a guy that played his position at a high level (thinking of an edge rusher / olb wanting 56) it can be done with class. Not saying that’s the situation with Nabers, but I’m pretty open to unretiring numbers I guess. honestly, pains me to say this, but the only retired numbers that really mean anything in sports is like the Yankees 3 and 4, maybe the bulls 23. Passed that there just isn’t that level of greatness reached to get too annoyed. Maybe Gretzky but hockey isn’t important.
