For many years from the 20s to late 50s red was a big part of our uniform.  They used to play in the Polo Grounds with the NY Baseball Giants who had a lot of red in their uniforms.  So football teams would ape baseball teams that they shared names and/or stadiums with.  Big Blue was an invention of the 60s forward when blue became the predominant color.
