Plax 4 Prez Posted June 29, 2006 Share Posted June 29, 2006 Glavine looks to avert sweep New York Mets (47-30) at Boston (47-28), 7:05 p.m. ET There is great potential for something special to come out of the starting pitcher matchup scheduled for Thursday night at Fenway Park. Tom Glavine, whose baseball roots have a decided New England influence, pitches for the Mets, and Curt Schilling, a Johnny-come-lately to the Red Sox Nation, throws for the Sox. Each starter has done some good work at the venerable ballpark. This matchup isn't a first, as the two veterans have started opposite each other six times, all before Glavine moved from the Braves to the Mets before 2003 and during Schilling's tenure -- 1992 through part of 2000 -- with the Phillies. Schilling has a 3-1 record in the six games, while Glavine is 1-3. And the Phillies won four of the six games. The Mets haven't seen Schilling since Aug. 5, 2001, in a game in Arizona, won 2-1 by the Diamondbacks. Among current Mets, only Steve Trachsel was with the team then. The Red Sox haven't seen Glavine since they beat him and the Braves at Turner Field June 16, 2002. Jason Varitek is the only current Red Sox player to appear in that game. Pitching matchup NYM: LHP Tom Glavine (11-2, 3.33 ERA) Glavine has a 3-1 record and 3.03 ERA in four career starts in Fenway. BOS: RHP Curt Schilling (9-2, 3.61 ERA) After winning four straight decisions, Schilling has no decisions in three straight starts, two of them Sox victories. Player to watch Carlos Delgado has eight hits, including two home runs, a triple and three doubles, in 24 career at-bats against Schilling.
