NY Giants should bench these players as season’s second half begins

Every once in while I come across an article that is spot on and this is one.  Makes you wonder what the other writers are doing.

Nate Solder:
This should have happened a long time ago.

Nate Solder is simply not good, we all know this.

Allowing three sacks on the season, with a PFF overall grade of 55.1, Solder has consistently allowed an onslaught of pressure on quarterback Daniel Jones.

With Andrew Thomas hopefully returning from injury this week against the Buccaneers, the NY Giants have to bench Nate Solder in favor of Matt Peart.

While yes, Matt Peart is not the best, he is still better than Solder.

Having a PFF grade of 65.5 and also allowing three sacks, if, for no other season, the NY Giants should play Peart to try to develop him in his second NFL season.

Peart is 24 years old, he has shown potential in the pass blocking game and has looked great at times in the run-blocking department. The NY Giants should at least try to see what Peart can do as a full-time starter.

To sum it up, the NY Giants know what they are getting out of Solder each game, and it is not good. Meanwhile, Matt Peart is a young tackle with some potential. There is no reason to not give Peart a chance. Solder has been given multiple chances and has failed time after time, it is time to move on from him and give the younger tackle a chance.

Oshane Ximines and Lorenzo Carter:
With the great play of Azeez Ojulari, alongside the emergence of Quincy Roche. The NY Giants need to end the era of Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines.

Ximines was already benched against the Raiders, inactive as a healthy scratch, and that should continue.

Both Carter and Ximines have been playing poorly all year. With Carter only putting up a measly 20 combined tackles, zero sacks, one QB hit, and one tackle for loss in seven games.

In the games he has played, Carter has appeared in 64% of defensive snaps. For the amount he plays this is unacceptable.

Ximines on the other hand has tallied 12 combined tackles, 0 sacks, 0 tackles for loss, and 2 QB hits in 8 games. He has played 33% of defensive snaps in these games. Ximines will likely not be seeing the field much anymore regardless, registering as a healthy scratch in last weeks game against the Raiders.

This is likely due to an offsides penalty Ximines obtained after a crucial interception made by the NY Giants late in the game against the Chiefs 2 weeks ago.

Neither of these players are playing at an even decent level and it is time to give other players a chance. The players who are most likely to replace Ximines and Carter are rookies; Ojulari and Roche.

Ojulari has been nothing short of spectacular this season.

Tallying 25 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks, seven QB hits, six tackles for loss, and 13 pressures in 65% of the defensive snaps this season. There are no more excuses for him to not be the NY Giants’ number one edge rusher on the team. Ojulari has played about the same percentage of snaps as Lorenzo Carter and has him beat in nearly every defensive metric.

Quincy Roche has just recently begun to break out, but he looks great so far. Roche has only played in 6 games so far this season, and out of these 6 games he has only played over 23 snaps in two of them.

In the games he started on the edge and produced. Tallying seven tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, three QB hits, and a forced fumble.

In Roche’s biggest game against the Raiders he played huge, getting a big sack at the end of the game in which he forced a fumble on Derek Carr. This sealed the game for the NY Giants. In this week Roche as graded as the 6th best pass rusher in the entire NFL. Not bad for a 6th round pick.

Both Azeez Ojulari and Quincy Roche have outplayed Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines all year. If the NY Giants want to attempt to have a successful pass rush it is time to make a change and bench Carter and Ximines.

Darius Slayton:
This one is more controversial, but the NY Giants should consider it.

Darius Slayton is struggling this season, that is clear to see. In 6 games he has caught just 12 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown, playing a career-low 56% of offensive snaps.

While Slayton dealt with a hamstring injury earlier in the season, he still has not played particularly well when he has been healthy.

Slayton has four drops on the season, this ranks him 32nd in the NFL among drops, but keep in mind that he is also tied with 16 other players for the 18th spot. However, the difference between Slayton and the other players on the list are their targets.

Slayton has been targeted 26 times on the season.

Out of all receivers who are either tied with or higher than Slayton in drops, only one other player has been targeted less than 40 times.

So, it’s pretty easy to think about the amount of drops Slayton would have if he got the same amount of targets as some of these other receivers.

If the NY Giants do desire to bench Slayton, John Ross should inherit those snaps.

Ross has also played in 6 games. Tallying 8 receptions for 189 yards and a TD. Ross fits the same archetype as Slayton as a deep threat with elite speed. However, he has been far more consistent than Slayton when he gets his opportunities.

Both Ross and Slayton have very similar numbers when you compare them. However, when you look at the snap counts and see that Ross only plays in 40% of snaps compared to Slayton’s 56%, it shows how Ross can be more impactful than Slayton.

Slayton only has 3 targets in the last 2 games, if the NY Giants are not going to target him they should give other players like Ross a bigger role.

Looks like he’s playing.  They took him off IR and he’s practicing

Couldn’t have come back at a better time.  If we can slow down that pass rush I think Jones/golladay/toney can shred that secondary

I think Peart has won that spot, he's playing respectable football. Even without the mean streak we'd hope for, he buries people in the run game.
