Earlier Sunday, reports indicated that the 66-year-old Gettleman was the front-runner and would get significant consideration to replace Jerry Reese. Gettleman was in the Giants personnel department from 1999-2012, serving 12 of those years as pro personnel director. Gettleman is among the few legitimate candidates who could be interviewed/hired now because he is not currently employed by another team. The Panthers fired him this summer after four seasons. Who would Gettleman recommend for head coach? Thats all speculation at this point. Guys with NFL head coaching experience who might be considered would include Mike Smith and Pat Shurmur. Smith, former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, is defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shurmur, offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, was head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2011 and 2012. He compiled a 9-23 record. ESPN said Shurmurs name is generating a ton of buzz. Among first-time candidates, Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks would likely be high on Gettlemans list.

Iceman_NYG
Why arent the Giants waiting till the EOY to interview that Pats guy - their Player Personnel head - his last name starts with a P - if they get him and Daniels as GM and Coach - Ill jerk off in my neighbours yard at 3.44am
JayD
Exactly Iceman. Why bring in a old washed up guy who obviously sucks? Who spend 4 years as a GM and was fired? I cant remember that guys name from the Pats, but from what Ive seen he is clearly the best choice by far. I hope this report is BS.
Sephiroth
Not quite sure Gettleman "sucks." Gettleman is considered the early favorite for the job. The 66-year-old worked in the Giants' front office for 15 years, serving as the pro personnel director from 1999-2011. Gettleman left the Giants to become the Panthers' general manager in 2013 and the team went 40-23-1 in his four seasons at the helm, with three playoff appearances and an NFC Championship in 2015. I loved when Gettleman was our pro player personnel guy. He'd get you a Ryan Mundy, a Gray Ruegamer, a Trumaine McBride. Guys that weren't stars, but wouldn't hurt you if they needed to see significant playing time. His drafts looked to have been pretty decent when he was with the Panthers too. I'd be pretty happy with Gettleman at the helm, but I agree, please no Mike Smith. He's even got the most boring name in the league.

Herc
This is all you need to know about Mike Smith: Division game, overtime, falcons at their own 29 on 4th and short he goes for it, they dont get it, fg Saints.

I think I remember him going for it a bunch of times against us in the playoffs too and we kept stonewalling them. I think it was the Mike Smith Falcons. Sephiroth
Found this on Gettleman too: Only four teams -- the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncosand Green Bay Packers -- won more playoff games than the Panthers (three victories) did in Gettleman's four seasons. The Panthers also won the division in three of his four seasons at the helm. I may be a believer.
Lughead
What's the deal with the rooney rule here?
Tempest
It all seems to be moving a bit fast. We don't know who else was in consideration or who has been interviewed. John Dorsey was supposed to visit before he was hired by Cleveland. I would not mind Gettleman getting the job provided the team interviews some other real candidates. Giants should pass on every single member of the Patriots organization not named Bill Belichick. Not one person leaving the Patriots has been as successful. gmenroc
What's the deal with the rooney rule here? Maybe because we just fired a black guy, we're excused? That, or they bring in token black guy to meet the rule and then hire Gettlemen. The Rooney rule has been abused for years now.
Lughead
I think it's a bs rule anyway. You know who you want then you should be allowed to just hire him. Take applications for a month. Check them over if anything catches your eye and you want to interview the person fine. They may be useful elsewhere down the line.

Herc
Rooney rule applies to head coaching and senior football operations positions so I guess that includes gms. Then again I didnt hear anything about the browns interviewing anyone in the 5 minutes between firing brown and hiring Dorsey so who knows

Next I'm gonna be hearing their equipment guy is a GM candidate! Rooney rule applies to head coaching and senior football operations positions so I guess that includes gms. Then again I didnt hear anything about the browns interviewing anyone in the 5 minutes between firing brown and hiring Dorsey so who knows And I think the Browns are gonna get fined for that. Rooney rule is a good thing. It's led to a bunch of hirings a year or two after the initial interview. Maybe a team knows they're not hiring a guy and just going through the motions but he impresses in the interview. GMs and front office types talk to each other a lot and names get circulated. Bigblue25
Im really interested in this Steve Wills guy. Wilks is the guy I like too, and I wouldnt mind Shurmur. Apparently the Giants really like John DeFilippo(Eagles QB coach was Giants OQC in 05/06) but theyd want to make DeFilippo OC and groom him since hes young and only has one year experience as a OC

Bigblue25
Here we go again Wilks is not old only 48. He is also not as stubborn as Coughlin and DeFilippo is very personable unlike McAdoo. I think thats a good combination and if DeFilippo gets HC looks down the road they cross that bridge at that time. Its rare to have a McDaniels/Belichick combo, but I think thats their goal
Herc
Yeah i am not being fair to someone i dont know anything about but I was just hoping theyd bring in a gm that had his own ideas and we went with those instead of who Mara and his people like

I cant see Caserio who most want, because 1. They wont wait until February to make this hire 2. Caserio most likely will want McDaniels, who wasnt the most player friendly guy in Denver or even now 3. Would want COMPLETE control and like you said Mara still has a say
