Giants Sign Derek Hagan To Bolster Depleted Receiving Corps

The Giants have signed receiver Derek Hagan to a one-year contract in order to bolster their decimated receiving corps, according to someone familiar with the move who requested anonymity because the deal has yet to be formally announced by the team.

Hagan spent last season with the Giants, appearing in 16 games on special teams and as a wide receiver. He caught eight passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. His familiarity with the offense likely worked in his favor, as he will surely see time this Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 6-1 Hagan was cut prior to the season after he was beat out in training camp by undrafted rookies Victor Cruz and Duke Calhoun.

Calhoun is currently one of three healthy receivers on the Giants roster, along with Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham. Cruz is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Steve Smith, the Giants' second-leading receiver, is nursing a pectoral injury and missed Sunday's loss to the Cowboys. Smith said Sunday he is not expecting to play this weekend against the Eagles.

In Smith's stead, Ramses Barden was expected to step into a more prominent role in the offense. However, to the dismay of the Giants, Barden is likely out for the season after sustaining ligament damage and a fracture in his lower left leg. He could be placed on injured reserve to make room on the roster for Hagan.

The Giants today also re-signed defensive tackle Dwayne Hendricks to their practice squad. The undrafted free agent spent the offseason with the Giants and was cut during training camp. He replaces Nate Collins, who was signed off the practice squad last Saturday, Nov. 13, by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

RT @HBalzer721: One WR #NYG worked out today is former Ram and Eagle Kevin Curtis. He had surgery for testicular cancer in September.

Hmm... Nicks and Manningham backed up by Hagan and Curtis? I guess I could imagine worse scenarios.
