How teams got their Nicknames New York Giants New York owner Tim Mara borrowed the Giants nickname from John McGraw's National League baseball team, a common practice by football teams during an era when baseball was the nation's preeminent team sport. I always had an inkling it had to do with skyscrapers. they were originally called the gothams and then after a victory their manager said " you are my giants" to praise them and it stuck.
