Phillips' knee healing as expected

I have no idea where people are getting the idea that his knee condition is a career ending situation. He can choose to retire but he can also play with it.

No one suggested that. Career threatening. Career altering. Possibly even career shortening.

It's arthritis in his knee, Temp. It's not going to get any better, you don't "recover" from arthritis. And he only lasted TWO games last year before he had to hang up the cleats. It's not like he got hit and had it injured... it just wore out.

LIke I said, he might gimp around for a few more years, but his career is effectively over... and the fact we picked up three safeties in the offseason only underscores my point.

Coughlin remains unsure, however, of just when the No. 1 draft pick from 2008 will be cleared to fully return to practice. Phillips, however, says the surgical knee that sidelined him after just two games in 2009 has progressed enough that he could step onto the field today if he was given the clearance by the medical staff.

"The goal is for training camp," Phillips said after observing Fridays practice. "Were just going to take our time. Theres no reason to rush it. I feel good, I feel proud of my progress so far. I could probably go out there right now but its more realistic for me to wait until training camp."

"Im running full-speed straight ahead, and doing some cutting," Phillips said. "I have no swelling, no pain at all, no anything. I really cant wait to get out there and start playing with these guys, and contributing to the team."
