Defensive end Dave Tollefson informed he will receive RFA tender from NY Giants

Barry Cofield is the biggest name on the list of the Giants’ impending restricted free agents and, so far, the team has yet to extend him a tender.

It’s the same for another member of the defensive line, though at least he’s been told a tender is on the way.

That player is Dave Tollefson, a three-year veteran who’s served as a rotational defensive end and solid special teams player since he was claimed off waivers from the Raiders in 2007.

The Giants have notified Tollefson he will receive a tender, according to someone informed of the talks between the player and the team. The person, who requested anonymity because the transaction isn’t yet official, said Tollefson is unsure what level tender he’ll receive.

Tollefson’s agent, Joe Flanagan, declined comment because he hasn’t yet received an offer from the team.

The 27-year-old Tollefson, who had a total of 4 1/2 sacks over the past two seasons, is one of two Giants players who will be a restricted free agent regardless of whether the collective bargaining agreement is extended. (TE Darcy Johnson is the other.) That’s because he has only three accrued seasons; players with four and five seasons accrued will be unrestricted free agents only if the collective bargaining agreement is extended before the start of free agency on March 5. That appears to be unlikely.

If the Giants tender Tollefson at his drafted level (seventh round), he’ll be slated to earn a salary of $1.101 million. The Giants would then have the right to match any offer from another team; if they chose not to, they’d receive a seventh-round pick. A second-round tender would cost the team about a half-million more ($1.684 million, to be exact).

The intent to tender Tollefson shows the Giants clearly want him around, so they have to be careful with this decision. The watered-down free-agent market could make the Bay Area native Tollefson more attractive to a few teams. One of them might be the Raiders, who signed Tollefson off the Packers’ practice squad in 2007 and recently hired former Giants defensive line coach Mike Waufle.
