NY Giants cut Super Bowl XLII hero David Tyree

by Mike Garafolo/The Star-LedgerSaturday September 05, 2009, 10:14 AM

Star-Ledger file photoGiantswide receiver David Tyree, whose last catch in a meaningful game wasarguably the greatest play in Super Bowl history, has been released bythe team. The Giants have made the tough decision everyone seemed to know was coming.David Tyree, the Super Bowl XLII hero, has been released, according to his agent, Michael Clouser.

"I talked to (assistant GM) Kevin Abrams thismorning and he said it was a very tough decision for the team," Clousersaid by phone minutes ago. "Like anyone else, it was a tough thing forDavid to hear. He's actually saying his goodbyes to his teammates rightnow.

"He's obviously disappointed, but we're confident someone else willsee the value he brings on special teams and as a wide receiver. We'llsee how things go here in the next few days."

Tyree told reporters the other day he realized his days with theteam might have been limited. He reflected on his time with the team, which he said he will always appreciate.

"What a joy it was to be a part of something so great from day one,"the 2003 sixth-round pick said. "My experience here has been nothingshort of a dream. To be placed in team history and sports history, where do you go from here?

"But at the same time, my love for this game hasn't died out yet andI really feel I still have something great to add onto my career andlegacy."

The cuts are trickling in as the Giants must get down to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday.

A surprising one I just heard is DE Maurice Evans, who has beenwaived. He was an undrafted free agent from Penn State and had a biggame in the preseason opener with a sack and forced fumble. Evans'draft stock, which was very high after he recorded 12 1/2 sacks in hissophomore season, dropped after he was suspended following marijuana-possession charges. He showed his ability against the Panthers and in camp, but it obviously wasn't enough to land him on the final roster.

DT Anthony Bryant, a third-year player from Alabama, has also beencut. Like Evans, he has practice-squad eligibility so he might not betotally gone. But Evans might find himself claimed come Sundayafternoon.

TE Michael Matthews has also been cut after playingevery game for the Giants over the past two seasons. That likely meansDarcy Johnson has been kept as the third TE with Kevin Boss and rookieTravis Beckum.

The Giants have waived QB Andre’ Woodson after he struggled all preseason long, and they’ve informed him that he’s not in their practice squad plans.

However, though I haven’t confirmed it yet, several NFL sources have told me that they’ve heard QB Rhett Bomar has been waived, too. If that’s true, then the Giants will be going with only two quarterbacks on their active roster - - just like they did last season. In that case, they would likely add Bomar back to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

And if he doesn’t, they’d either have to change their mind and add Woodson to their practice squad again, or claim somebody else.

And remember this, Boley is suspended for week one so he does not take up a roster spot. After week 1, the Giants will have to cut one more.

whats our Number now? we were at 74 , 1 below the NFL allotment before Thursdays game are we at 66 now?

From MG

QB Rhett Bomar has been cut, source says. Several reports say Andre' Woodson has been cut. Do know Bomar to psquad guy if he clears

Apparently OL Orrin Thompson has announced his cut on his own Facebook pg. That's what I'm told anyway

LB Kenny Ingram waived. I'd imagine they'd keep him on practice squad while he bulks up and gets used to playing LB

From Ralph:

S Travonti Johnson is cut and could be headed to the practice squad. S Sha-reff Rashad is reportedly cut. Only three safeties?

CB Vince Anderson

G/T Orrin Thompson

T Cliff Louis

DT Leger Douzable

RB Wright, Dwayne

RB Allen Patrick (PS)

I believe this will be the cuts I forgot about Anthony Bryant in my math earlier so we will need just 12 more cuts not 13

For a 6th round player lasting this long and making a lasting SB highlight and career game is something to be proud of. It's too bad he was injured last year because it would have been his shot to get some playing time. I guess Moss gets another year to try and do something.
