boohyah
or so it seems. Boy, if Carney is gone then I hope the Giants bring someone in that does beat out Tynes.
MakeMeSomeFoodHo
carney was great last year, but lets be honest...did the guy even attempt anything over 35 yards? Tynes is not the answer either, the Giants need to get a much better kicker.
Plax 4 Prez
I honestly don't see a reason we wouldn't bring Carney back for at least one more year. He was consistant and he did make some good kicks over 35 yards. Coughlin just likes to go for it more in those situations for some reason. Storm
What in the hell is wrong with David Carr....? That article says he resigned with us...? If you're David Carr, how do you not at least test the free agent waters? He could definitely start somewhere. But, I didn't like Tynes or Carney kicking for us...thought I do tend to prefer Lawrence... We need someone who can kickoff inside the opponents 5 instead of struggling to get it inside their 15...field position killed us a couple of times down the stretch. That article also says: In case you missed it, I updated my last blog entry to include the full terms of David Carr’s new deal with the Giants. I initially told you the deal was for one year and would pay him a $1 million salary in 2009. That’s true. However, he also got a $1 million signing bonus, according to an NFL source, and there is another bonus of $100,000, making the total value of the deal $2.1 million over the one year. 2.1 million to work the practice squad, hold a clipboard for Eli, and not get his ass pummeled into next week? I could think of worse gigs. I'm sure if he had to play, he'd feel better playing behind the Giants Oline as opposed to anyone else's.

I guess...is that something that is looked for in NFL quarterbacks, though? By that logic, it's more like David Carr has Houston Texans O-Line Syndrome....he seems shell shocked....he could make significantly more playing somewhere else starting, instead he's choosing to spend another season backing up and rarely seeing the field Don't get me wrong, I love the signing, and it's great for us as a team, and it's nice to see someone wanting to stay on the Giants as opposed to the mass exodus we had from our defense last season, but it just seems Carr is kind of copping out... MakeMeSomeFoodHo
carr said he didnt want to go to a team and wind up in the same situation as he was in with the texans. cant really blame him. the guy is happy in what he is doing..more power to him. To me, that sounds like he's hesitant to even get back in the game. No team needing a new quarterback in the coming years is going to have a Pro Bowl offensive line. Whichever team picks up a backup QB to come in and start is hurting in more ways than just quarterback. He's not gonna be able to just go start for the Patriots or the Cowboys or some other decent team and those O-lines...if he wants a chance elsewhere there's no way he could ever afford to be picky and wait for a team with a good offensive line. If he does go somewhere else, he's gonna go to a team that is rebuilding, will likely end up mentoring a young drafted QB.... It just seems like flawed reasoning, don't get me wrong, I'm very glad Carr stayed because I feel he does have the ability to be a starter in this league. It's just that he's waiting a year and he's going to be in the same exact position next year.
Plax 4 Prez
I'm confidant that if David Carr had to go in for Eli that he would play great. He likes our system, has great RB support, has decent WR's, and most of all has a great O-Line. He's pretty accurate, and if he has time he doesn't make mistakes. He's also very mobile, which I'm not used to in Giants QB's. He actually reminds me of Romo. Only differance is I don't hate Carr.

I guess what I was trying to say was: The plus for Carr: If he had to come in and play, at least it would be behind a decent Oline, instead of a shitty Oline where he'd get beat to crap. The plus for the Giants: They have a backup QB who, behind a decent line, is capable of at least managing, if not winning, a game. Win-win. I see your point though, if Carr is indeed shell shocked, why would we want him to backup Eli. There was another thread on Carr and a few other signings/droppings where he said how happy he was to work with the defense, and how the coaches were happy with the work he was doing. I guess if I had to cop out, $2 mil would probably heal my ego.
RandolphScott
John Carney sucks balls. He lived up to his reputation of making all the little kicks and missing the big ones. I don't want him back after missing those field goals in the playoffs. Does anyone remember him missing the extra point when he was with the Saints? The Saints pulled of a modern day miracle with a bunch of laterals...Carney misses the extra point and that caused the Saints to miss the playoffs that year. I want Carney no where near this team, just like I didn't want him last year.
Virginia Giant
Carney was pretty good for us, not great, not even that much above average, but he made the kicks he should of made. That said, in the playoffs he let of down (one of the people who did), and watching the pro bowl when the KR let the ball go my first thought was that was the first Carney kick off to reach the end zone this year. Carney, Tynes, both have their strengths, but both have weaknesses. Hopefully, by some miracle we find someone who can win the job.

MakeMeSomeFoodHo
That he can atleast make a field goal when the wind is in his face? and can kick the ball past the 20 yard line on kickoffs with the wind blowing OUT. Just about any kicker could have done what Carney did last season. The guy had some of the easiest FG's ever. 25 yards, 31 yards, 27 yards, 29 yards, 17 yards. I could have hit most of those. Carney only attempted 8 FG's longer than 39 yards...and thats including the 2 in the playoff game against the eagles....and he was 5 for 8...not very good. xxi-xxv
I do not get the huge hate for Tynes. He was 8-8 last year in Fg's between 40-49 yards and that in and of itself is a huge thing to be able to do considering he kicks 8 games at Giants stadium. He was 85% last year on Fgs and his missed extra points(2)were more based on bad snaps then actual shanks. I know he missed the 2 fg's in GB(one was a poor snap he still should have hit it though)but the man came out running on the field with a real set of balls attempting and nailing that 47 yarder based on what happened previously. You have to like that confidence in a kicker, not to mention his ability to have confidence in kicking longer field goals, something Carney just cannot do anymore. Tynes comes back I have no problem. Would I like an upgrade? Yeah sure, but is it Rod Bironas? David Akers? Jeff Reed? It cannot be some rookie or unproven guy, not on this team anyway. boohyah
Teams draft kickers and they pan out and they stick around for a while, we don't for some reason and we've been picking up scraps for years. It's time to get someone decent. Tynes is not decent.
