Butler addresses his future

S James Butler will have to wait and see about Giants future

by Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger Monday January 12, 2009, 12:29 PM

After the Giants locked up CB Corey Webster last month, S James Butler is the remaining Giants defensive starter who will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. At baggie day in the Giants locker room this morning, he spoke of his future in uncertain terms.

"I want to be back, but you never know," Butler said. "(In) free agency, the Giants have to take care of their business, and I have to take care of mine -- that's the biggest thing."

Butler, the Giants' starting strong safety responsible for making the calls in the secondary, said there weren't any talks during the season about renewing his contract here. He was originally acquired by the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2005.

It's unlikely Butler will be back, given that safety isn't a position the Giants have traditionally paid to keep. Last season, starter Gibril Wilson left for a six-year, $39-million deal with Oakland. Plus, the team drafted Kenny Phillips in the first round last spring

Again, I don't think the Giants will offer him much and he'll paid by someone, nowhere close to Gibril money, but certainly more than the Giants gave him last year, which I think was $1.3million.

i dont see other teams offering him much

id like to see us tender him for a year and draft patrick chung in the 2nd(though we may have to do some maneuvering to get him and kenny britt in the 2nd

He'll be under pressure from Phillips to keep his job, so signing for another year going into camp and then being a backup will hurt him making money later on. Even if he pulled in a 3 year contract making 2-3 million a year, he'd be better off doing it. Butler might be better off playing for someone in a 3-4 defense.

if phillips moves to starter he takes johnsons job. it would then be phillips and butler.

unless you think if phillips becomes a starter they then automatically move johnson to SS over butler.

Spags has said before, that this defense requires guys to know how to play strong and free safety and that there's very little difference in the 2. So Phillips would be able to replace either one. But the Giants are very high on Johnson, and rightly so, the kid is good.

i havent read anything to indicate they are higher on johnson than butler, seems the only thing johnson has on butler right now is he is still under contract

if phillips or johnson switch to SS id rather it be johnson.

i like patrick chung out of oregon alot too.

Pdub, I know the Giants are high on Johnson, but I have no idea if they are higher on him than Butler. I wasn't indicating that, but perhaps they think Butler is expendable because of Johnson or Phillips.

Who knows?

possibly but knight probably wont be returning so that would leave us with only 2 safeties, if they can get butler back for a cheap 1 year tender it would be someone that has a year of starting under his belt obviously knowing the system.

and then we'd still have to get another safety through free agency or draft.
