This is why athletes carry guns.

Here's an addition to that; Smith was robbed at gun point a week ago:

Giants receiver Smith robbed at gunpoint outside home

New York Giants second-year receiver Steve Smith was robbed at gunpoint in the early hours of Nov. 25 after arriving home, according to Clifton, N.J., police.

Smith had just returned to his townhouse in a chauffeur-driven car when he was approached from behind by man who held a gun to Smith's head, Clifton police Capt. Robert Rowan said.

"He said to him, 'Give me everything you got,' and Mr. Smith turned over his jewelry and money and cell phone," Rowan said Tuesday.

The man left the scene and is still being sought, Rowan said. It was unclear if Smith's driver was at the townhouse during the holdup.

The robbery was first reported Sunday by NBC's Tiki Barber, a former Giants running back.

NFL security has been informed of the incident, league spokesman Greg Aiello said, according to Newsday. "We're aware of the situation," he said.

I heard Carl Banks on FAN and he offered a much wiser option: hire a body guard for the night! He said off duty cops are always looking to make a few bucks and it doesn't even cost that much. Also, he said there is complete confidentiality and players do not have to worry about "big brother" watching. He said he got to know a few guys he felt comfortable with and one of them was always available when he wanted to go out on the town. Probably cost him $300-$400 bucks per night - tip money for these guys. I think that's the way I'd go.

Yep. There's no reason except ego to think you should be doing your own security.

Keyshawn on Sunday Countdown was also saying that the NFL has some type of hotline that will also hook you up with these cops or any bodyguards. The guy is just an ego maniac who wanted to showoff and probably should have been scared. Plax's actions invite trouble and now he has found it big time.

Just so you know, I really dig your weekly sigs. So far i have agreed with each choice you make as your own little player of the game honor. :TU:

Well this thread proves why every pro athlete should be concerned about their lives. I agree that bringing a gun to a club is more than stupid. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be worried. Carl Banks wasn't a player during this age of finding addresses and phone numbers with the click of a mouse. Not all these guys like 4th round draft picks make enough money to pay for a 24 hr 7 day security crew.
