AIKMAN: BARBER'S TO BLAME

By JUSTIN TERRANOVA

September 7, 2007 -- Tiki Barber's presence in the Giants' backfield was immense, but Troy Aikman said he believes Barber's attitude off the field is one of the reasons the team did not win a Super Bowl during his career.

"When you look at the Giants, and you say, why haven't they been able to accomplish more, and you see some of the things we have witnessed, like Tiki Barber's comments regarding Eli Manning, I don't think you have to look much further than that and say maybe now I understand why that team has underachieved," said Aikman, a former Cowboys quarterback now an NFL analyst for FOX.

Barber criticized Manning for the lack of leadership ability he saw when the two shared a backfield for Big Blue. Barber aired his opinion when he debuted with NBC's "Football Night in America" during halftime of the Giants-Ravens preseason game Aug. 19.

"He didn't feel like his voice was going to be strong enough and it showed," Barber said of Manning. "Sometimes it was almost comical the way that he would say things."

Aikman said he thinks the reason his Cowboys teams were successful was a lead-by-example attitude.

"I am a firm believer you win with great character as well as great talent," Aikman said. "Wade Wilson came into Dallas in 1996 to be my backup and he said to me, 'The hardest-working guys on this team are the best players on this team.' And that's why we had success. That's what I look to when I think about the great teams I was a part of."

Aikman said he sees this as Manning's chance to prove Barber wrong.

"With Tiki being gone, it opens the door for Eli to be more assertive in the locker room," said Aikman, who quarterbacked the Cowboys to three Super Bowl wins in the '90s. "You just don't play with guys with the ability and production of a Tiki Barber, but that's not to say this team can't be better."

Barber left the Giants after last season to pursue a career in broadcasting, which landed him at NBC. On his way out the door, he ripped Tom Coughlin's coaching methods.

Jimmy Johnson, coach of the Cowboys during their dynasty, said Barber is forgetting how Coughlin helped him overcome his fumbling woes.

"If it hadn't been for Tom Coughlin, Tiki Barber might not have even been playing the last couple of years," Johnson said. "If he kept on dropping the ball the way he was, he would have been over on the sidelines. I guess when he started broadcasting he got smarter and forgot about all of that."

2 things:

1) Let the Fox versus NBC battle commence.

2) Aikman would be well advised not to bring up Wade Wilson and hard work in the same reference, in light of what just happened to Wade.

Other than that the article is fine.Aikman commands more respect than Tiki does.

The Wade Wilson thing is bullshit IMHO. He should have been upfront about it and informed the Cowboys/NFL but he was not taking HGH to be a better athlete or a better coach, he was taking it for his diabetes.

I under why he was taking it, but it's a fucking banned substance and he said nothing. That's dumb.

Aikman didnt have shit under control during his tenure, he was just lucky to be surrounded by alot of god givin talent. Nor did he command anything, he should just keep quiet.

Off the field that team was a mess, on the field people were accountable. Indy has had more talent, didn't win it all till last year. I think dallas of the early-mid 90's was a group leader type situation, if you fucked up on the field or whatever, a lot of guys were gonna come down on you, not to mention JJ.

Aikman is dead on with his comments.

Huh? Taking HGH increases your chance of developing diabetes.

This is why what you say can not be taken for anything other than the rants of a rose colored bias Giant fan. Nothing under control? Man won 3 Super Bowls, was the MVP in one of them, is a hall of famer and pretty much was the rock that held that team together. Again, placing this in a Giants light as that seems to be the only way you will say anything remotely close to the truth in terms of Giants criticism, what would you say if someone said the same EXACT thing, about Phil Simms. He was also surronded by tons of talent, 2 hall of fame coaches did he not have "shit" under control?

Btw, anyone hear Tikis retort to this on Mike and the Mad Dog? I am paraprhasing here, but he said something to the effect, "is this the same Troy Aikman who bailed on Barry Switzer and transferred to UCLA after one ?"

Bringing up what someone did at 19 :LMAO: . I guess Tiki did not know that Troy got hurt, Switzer and Oklahoma went BACK to the wish bone offense. Switzer told Aikman after the success they had after he got hurt that they would ne returning to the wish bone offense. Troy Aikman made a smart decision, he is not a wish bone QB. Tiki is getting desperate and it is showing. I wish he would just go away and bang his asian wife like John Lennon did after the Beatles broke up.

actually I heard on ESPN RADIO he told the nfl he took it because he had a bad case of limp dick that Viagara and Cialis would not cure and he just wanted a normal way of living. HGH I guess from what they were saying makes a member "Proud" to be in action but I aint no dick Dr. so I don't know if HGH has this effect.

Troy Aikman was very smart leaving Oklahoma and going to UCLA, he'd never have gotten the chance to show what he could have done.

Jamelle was the shit tho. No one could run a wishbone like that. Many have tried and failed since.

He got us a championship while Troy got a gator bowl or some shit.

Well, i guess VG got it, but you didnt. He commented on Tiki's attitude OFF the field, and I find it funny because he didnt win those SB's because he had things off the field under control  or because of his attitude, he won those SB's because he and his fuckup cast had tremendous talent. So HE, should shut the fuck up. How can you let a COWBOY  comment on something that aint his business, and you slam a Giant for supposedly doing the same thing?? And if you say "because he's in the media", that being hypocritical, because that why Tiki says things.

i heard the interview, i lost count at how many times tiki would declare one thing and then later on contradict himself. no one cares about his ben franklin quotes or that his momma's proud of him that he speaks his mind. or that he's 'not scared' (meanwhile he backpeddles on his coughlin comments--'coughlin's a good coach', the money comments--horrible excuse there, and the eli comments--'he's a good qb, he'll be a great leader'). he was getting heated that mike and chris kept interrupting them too, that's what happens when you get interviewed on the radio! im glad francessa told him straight up that he didn't believe that the retirement announcement wasn't done intentionally by him and his agent

This in a nutshell slams home my point with you, you have no ability to take away what the context is as opposed to who it is.

The bottom line is this, no matter how you cut it Aikman won Super Bowls, three more than Tiki in fact, in fact he was also the MVP in one of them, he also is a hall of famer, first ballot one in fact. To bang home a point that your beloved Tiki seems to feel is necessary he was the leader(as all Qb's should be and not a comical one at that like Tiki says they should be)of that team, won that won 3 super bowls, despite friction between the coach and owner and plethora of egomanical players with their own agendas, you know like Tiki Barber. No matter how many hookkers and 8 balls Irvin was doing, Aikman got them to perform on Sunday as the teams Qb. That cannot be argued.

Tiki's attitude off the field was always me first, he would rather trek up to Connecticut twice a week in season to do this week in football than learn how to carry the ball, it was this current staff that put a stop to that in 2004. My guess is he still harbors resentment that he was unable to go tape a TV show. DO not forget mean old Tom Coughlin curbed his media appearances, during the week in season.

See this is where you do not get it and sadly I do not think you will. Aikman is not a Cowboy anymore, he is a respected member of the media, one who has an ability to comment on more than just his former team.

Here is the problem with your well thought out "in the media" retort. When is Tiki gonna start commenting on other things because he is now "in the media"? My guess, when book sales are finished and the Giants are through with Sunday night appearances for a while.

i heard the espn radio interview too, the one where he said something to the effect of "maybe eli can be a leader now that a dominant presence like myself is gone" it never ends with this guy

Well, he was a dominant presence, he's not lying.

I think you missunderstood me, Cowboy or not Troy was the finger in the dike for that team.

Wow, Tiki generates that much hate out of you, you type a whole novel pertaining to the subject.

See, maybe this is a better way to explain my point, it aint that big a deal.

As for the bolded comment, yeah I know, thats what Tiki does.

Only way to get through to you and the blue colored glasses, which obviously still does no good. Maybe less big word will help?
