PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies All-Star second baseman Chase Utley broke his right hand when he was hit by a pitch during Thursday's 7-6 loss to the Washington Nationals.

Utley was hit in the fifth inning by Washington's John Lannan, who was making his major league debut. Utley finished the game, going 2-for-4, but X-rays after the game showed he broke a bone in the hand.

Utley planned to see a specialist on Friday to determine the first step in his recovery.

"As breaks go, it's not that bad of a break," Utley said. "It's definitely disappointing."

Utley, batting .336 with 17 homers and 82 RBI, didn't think he'd be sidelined for a month.

"I think it will be sooner than that," he said.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said that Abraham Nunez will likely replace Utley at second base.

Having an MVP caliber season (after signing a 7 year contract mind you) and this shit happens to him. That's the Phils for you.

And what the fuck has happened to baseball? This guys hits the Phillies two star players (he also hit Howard in the very next at bat) and there's no retaliation? Considering the pitcher, I doubt it was on purpose, but a message should have been sent.

of course no retaliation. The Mets should have retaliated half a dozen times this year for players getting plunked but has not happened. Not sure if teams are just afraid to do it now a days. And the guy who hit Utley and Howard is from Long Island and a life long Mets fan. A coincidence? Who knows

I have already decided that the umpires are ridiculously ineffective this year, so the fact that a message was not sent....is not surprising.

As far as retaliation....

The Phils are not built with hot heads. Remember, these guys ran out on the field during a storm in CO. to help the grounds crew hold down the tarp.

Their momma's are proud.

Like I said, I really doubt it was intentional. It was the kids first major league start, I think the ball just got away from him with Utley, then he got shook up and nervous and it happened again with Howard.

But that doesn't mean that the next Nationals batter shouldn't get a fastball high and tight.

Hopefully, Chase will be back before the end of next month.

I just purchased tickets to the Mets game on the 28th, and it would be awesome to see him come back on or before then.

I'll start praying now.

You can thank frank robinson for bring the candy ass to baseball a few years ago, suspending guys for paybacks. its bullshit. The Rangers have one guy who will throw at anybody (padilla and he's been hurt and/or ineffective all year). I remember a time where if someone got plunked, the batters in the following half inning braced for impact.
