Giants to Meet with Dominic Rhodes

The Giants, looking for a running back to split the backfield with Brandon Jacobs, are visiting with Dominic Rhodes, one of the heroes of the Indianapolis Colts’ win in Super Bowl XLI.

6z007n7n.jpgRhodes, who rushed for 113 yards on 21 carries in the Colts’ 29-17 win over the Chicago Bears and could have been named the Super Bowl MVP, was due into New Jersey this morning, according to his agent. The 5-9, 203-pounder seems to be an ideal candidate to complement Brandon Jacobs (6-4, 264). And since he’s never been a fulltime back in his six NFL seasons, he’d likely be happy with only 10-15 carries per game.

The downside of Rhodes is a recent arrest for DUI. According to reports, he was arrested on Feb. 20 at 3 a.m. when he was driving 81 mph in a 55-mph zone. The 28-year-old was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after his blood-alcohol level tested at 0.09 -- 0.01 above Indiana’s legal limit.

It was Rhodes’ second brush with the law. In March, 2002, he was arrested on domestic battery charges when he allegedly struck his live-in girlfriend, according to reports. He avoided a conviction by entering a diversion program six months later.

Rhodes could be fined or suspended by the NFL if he is convicted of DUI or admits to the charges -- something the Giants need to consider strongly before signing him.

By the way, at the scouting combine last week in Indianapolis, Tom Coughlin was asked if Rhodes’ legal troubles eliminated him from the Giants plans. “Well, it probably doesn’t help him,” Coughlin said. “I can say that. Whether or not it eliminates him, I don’t know if that’s the case. But it certainly doesn’t help.”

It’s safe to say Coughlin was going to ask him for an explanation when they met today.

It’s early and the phone calls/E-mails haven’t started flowing in yet, but here are a few morning tidbits for you:

  • The Giants apparently have joined three other NFC East teams in a hot pursuit of Arizona LT Leonard Davis. The Giants are looking for a veteran to man that position for a year or two until Guy Whimper is ready. The price could be high, though.
  • Michael Strahan met with GM Jerry Reese yesterday to discuss his future with the team. I don’t know yet what was specifically said, but Strahan is not going to be cut or traded. And if he was going to be traded, it certainly wouldn’t be to the Redskins.
  • The Giants are in the mix for New England LB Tully Banta-Cain, but no visit has been scheduled yet.
  • Despite speculation that they were interested in Cincy G Eric Steinbach as a possible LT, they haven’t called his agent and the bidding for him is supposedly already high.

here is another article about him

The Rams have made outside linebacker/defensive end Tully Banta-Cain an early priority, as they are hosting him on a free-agent visit today in St. Louis.

"The jet was smoking first thing this morning," said James Sims, Banta-Cain's agent.

Sims said Banta-Cain is intrigued by the Rams.

"They would bring out the best in Tully and allow him to do what he does best, use his versatility as a 4-3 end, or as a 3-4 linebacker," he said. "They like his versatility and they pose a great opportunity for him, which is very important to Tully in addition to a potential financial package. He?s been biding his time in New England.?

Sims added that Banta-Cain has also received interest from the Steelers, Dolphins and 49ers, among others. He said Banta-Cain hasn't ruled out a return to the Patriots. http://www.boston.com

Heard his name mentioned a few times, but never saw him play. In other news, Cato June is visiting with us tomorrow (or soon) and John Clayton is expecting him to sign for about $4-5 million per year.
