Giants, O'Hara Contract Talks Hit A Snag

Filed under: NY Giants, NFC East, New York, NFL Free Agency

One of the Giants major concerns this offseason is working out a contract with center Shaun O'Hara. Both sides have expressed their desire to come to an agreement, but as of this moment contract talks have hit a snag. This sudden issue comes less then 24 hours after the Cowboys re-signed Pro Bowl Center Andre Gurode to a six-year deal.

According to the report the two sides are so far apart that the Giants are now considering other options. It was also noted that O'Hara is now the premier free agent center on the market, which means his agent will be seeking the maximum possible.

If the Giants are to move ahead without O'Hara, they might have an eye on Ryan Kalil out of USC in the upcoming draft. Other options would be re-signing Grey Ruegamer and using him as a replacement.

o we went from having an above average line to basically no line. Which means all of our concentration will be on it, and our d probably will suck even more compared to last year.

Jeez, this is bad news. I always thought that Seubert was bigger, meaner, and nastier than O'hara... but now we might need him to play Guard since it looks like Diehl may be our starting Tackle.

Ugh. Maybe trade up in the draft for the premiere LT available? How are the prospects this year?

As far as I know there are 4 worthy of a 1st round pick, but only Thomas is worth taking in the early 1st, imo. Levi Brown could fall to us, but I dont think he's anything special. Sears will probably tank at LT, and Joe Staley looks like he'll be a good one, but he's a project like Whimper.

anyone, anyone?

Im not sure, but I think it was to clear salary under the cap to sign free agents with. Plus it is the stand-up thing to do so Luke can go and look for another team.

Im not sure what sort of $ Ohara is looking for but I would hardly call him any better then Above Average Center. He shouldnt get Great Center or even Good Center $ in a long term deal.

Amazing Turnaround: Giants, O'Hara Close on New Deal

What a difference two days make. Less then 48 hours ago the Giants were considering life without Shaun O'Hara and O'Hara was preparing to hit the open market. Now the two sides appear to be very close on a new deal that will keep O'Hara in New York for another five or six years.

According to the reports two days ago, the big snag was that O'Hara wanted to be the top paid center in the league. He was looking for a six-year deal worth $30 million and a hefty signing bonus. Apparently the Giants and new General Manager Jerry Reese have gotten that number down a bit; closer to six-years and $24 million.

"Both sides are really happy with the progress so far," O'Hara's agent Noel LaMontagne said.

This is certainly pleasant news for Giants fans. No one wanted to see O'Hara go, but there was no way he was worth $30 million over six years. Hopefully the two sides can agree on this new contract before free agency begins on March 2nd.

Also from the The Star Ledger news about Grey Ruegamer

The Giants and the agents for center Shaun O'Hara have drawn closer in their contract talks and are expected to reach a deal before the start of free agency March 2, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The person, who requested anonymity because talks are ongoing, said a contract could be completed in the next two days. The person expects the deal to be worth an average of approximately $4 million per season over five or six years with $7.5 million to $8.5 million guaranteed -- slightly less than the contract the Cowboys just gave center Andre Gurode.

The Giants had no comment. Noel LaMontagne, one of O'Hara's agents, would not confirm a deal was imminent but said in an e-mail message "both sides are really happy with the progress so far."

O'Hara, 29, a Hillsborough native and former Rutgers lineman, has started 43 of 48 regular-season games over the past three years, missing the rest due to ankle injuries and an infection in his leg.

If the Giants and O'Hara's agents don't finalize a deal, he will be the top center on the market and could draw interest from teams such as the Cardinals, Buccaneers, Browns, Bills and Rams.

The Giants, meanwhile, would then turn to Tampa Bay center Sean Mahan, according to someone familiar with the team's thinking. The Eagles' Hank Fraley and Dallas' Al Johnson are cheaper alternatives to Mahan.

Meanwhile, another person who is aware of the Giants' plans, said they have made a one-year contract offer to re-sign backup guard/center Grey Ruegamer, who started the season finale in Washington last season. Ruegamer is expected to sign unless another team makes a multi-year offer.

Jerry Reese is in Indy

so Ralph Vacchiano Reports

# Oh, and hey, I can confirm that new Giants GM Jerry Reese is here. He’s overworked, doing two jobs – GM and director of player personnel. Assistant GM Kevin Abrams is handling the negotiations with center Shaun O’Hara, who will be an unrestricted free agent if he’s not signed by March 2.

The two sides have been making progress and it’s a good bet a deal will be struck before the combine is over. The last thing the Giants need, after cutting Luke Petitgout, is to create another hole on their offensive line.

the prospect of Diehl at starting left tackle is seriously worrying me !

for me, left tackle is arguably the most important postion on the field and MUST always be filled by a specialist

i am getting some unpleasant visions of Eli's blind side here ! ....aren't you guys ?

While O'Hara may not be the best he was solid all season long for us. I especially liked watching him and Snee pull on a sweep.

I dissagree Charlie...O'hara has a great heart and is a great leader. But, he's physically over matched on a daily basis. He one the main reasons why Eli can't step up in the pocket. I know fans don't want to hear it(kinda like how Finn isn't a great FB), but its true.

I don't think that's the case at all. Eli got time to throw and O'hara did a good job blocking. The center is the leader of the line and furthermore O'hara and Eli have a good relationship out there. It's important to have that cohesiveness, much like Peyton has with Jeff Saturday.

You gotta ease up on the Finn deal, he's not a bad full back and the Giants should not be looking to replace him, we have much bigger problems.
