Hampton27 missed
Here is the thing that bothers me about Eli, not his arm strength (for him to throw off his back foot again & again for 30-40 yards tells me he has the arm strength) or his leadership or decision making but his accuracy. IMO it's determined by one thing.... footwork. 9 times out of 10 you see him drop back to pass & when he throws he doesn't step into it, he throws the same way Carmelo Anthony throws a punch..... he lets it go & almost runs away. This affects the two most important aspects of throwing; accuracy & velocity (notice how a pitcher throws, he steps into the throw and faces his target all the way through the delivery). Now the thing I want to know is what is causing his footwork to be so poor..... protection or is it him not doing things right? If it is protection do you change the blocking scheme or do you alter the playcalling to go to a quicker tempo pass game (i.e. 3 step drop & the ball comes out, quick rythym gets the defense playing up at the line & then let it fly deep). One way or another Eli has to learn to step into the throw & follow through, just look at the way Elway or Simms used to throw.... STEP INTO THE THROW!!!! You hit the nail on the head. Eli isn't comfortable and he's afraid of getting hit. His reflexes aren't allowing him to follow through. I have seen him follow through on a few occasions with defenders in his face but not consistently. I think that the more he gets hit, the better he'll become. Did Simms follow through on all his passes early in his career or did it take him a few years?

The Giants in 1979-1981 flat out sucked offensively! Simms had NO ONE to really throw to and no protection in his early years. Simms was getting killed...hence the reason why Scott brunner got a chance to be a starting QB. And when Parcells came to the forefront, Simms had zero room to suck. Parcells got on that dudes ass! I just don't see the same coming from TC toward Eli. It's like they treat Eli with kid gloves.

A few thoughts on this topic... I think Eli has excellent arm strength and is surprisingly very accurate on long bombs...that long completion to Plas was a perfect pass...not underthrown like usual...in stride. After reading some articles and watching him play I really think its his mechanics and that comes down to coaching. I am not sure what Coughlin thought when he took this job and inserted Eli in the middle of the season (probably the same thing that everyone thought he was a Peyton) but he made mistake...he didn't coach him well or I should say Gilbride hasn't and still isn't. Mike and the Mad Dog bring up a good point...when they said the core of the Giants is bad. The personality and the culture is bad...Remember when they were the youngest team in the NFL back then with a promising future and I am going all the way to the 97 year?? The Fassel personality still hasn't left this team, its there still...very strange team. They need a new identity...not the dominant personalities of Tiki and Strahan et al...Tiki retiring could be one of the better things to happen to the Giants next year. One less loud mouth in the team... How come the other teams' running backs/TE/DT don't do this...?? or is it the NYC media coverage, etc? You see Alge Crumpler mouth of at his coach after a 9-7 season last year? How about Rudi Johnson? Tomlinson? Larry Johnson in KC? Why do these assholes think they can do that? They haven't won anything...stfu and play! Couglin is a good coach for the most part but has had very poor (weak would better) supporting cast/assistant coaches and I've said that from the start...if they don't make the playoffs he might be pressured to change his coaches and I welcome that. icavesai69
He's average. It's just that his last name is Manning. Average arm strength, average decision making, slightly below average accuracy, average to slightly below leadership skills. He'll be an average QB in this league. Lots of them have won Superbowls (Rypien, Dilfer, etc.), and maybe we can with Manning, but he'll never be his brother. Hell, he'll never be Donovan McNabb. He's a third round pick if his last name is "Jones." You compared Trent Dilfer to Eli? Wow... Trent Dilfer was horrible, why do you think he was cut after he won a fuckin superbowl? Eli is above average, but not great. And he's certainly not a bust, those are the guys like Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, Joey Harrington, etc...
BIGBLUE01
coaching staff. the guy's been great when he's making plays on his own, but when it comes time to stick to this staff's gameplan or run the plays that are called then forget it, he's got nothing to work with. it's no coincidence this guy is usually better at the end of the game when he has more say in what play to call I agree, I dont think his arm strength is average either, as Sepiroth above you said. He chooses to throw that way alot of the time, for some reason. But when you see him workin the 4th quarter comeback, he drills it. Sometimes in an opening TD drive too. It baffles me. When he has all the time in the world, he lofts this pussy throw. I think he's shown that he has the god given ability to be elite, its time for him to be consistent with it now.
