  1. You've hit the nail on the head. The list of big name washouts that came to New York is long and storied. Anyone remember how Randy Johnson was going to be the savior...or Pavano...or Jim Abbott (although he did pitch one no-hitter)...or Black Jack ('fuck you fans') McDowell...or Dwight Gooden...or Kenny Rogers...or Hideki Irabu....or Denny Neagle....or Adrian "lil Ducque" Hernandez...or Kevin Brown....or Jose Contreras....or my favorite bust whom I thought would be the savior, Jeff Weaver. The list of pitchers failing to come up to expectations that put on the pinstripes is looonnnnnggg and sad...and there's certainly no guarantee Santana wouldn't just be added to the list. Of course there were a few who panned out, Jimmy Key, David Cone, Clemens, and.....uhhhhhhh...I'm sure there are more, just can't think of any. I'd put Mussina soemwhere between busts and winner....he's a pretty consistent .500 pitcher, which has made him neither a bust nor a winner. Regardless, I am sure glad that the Yanks are stopping from gutting out the kiddie farm for a guy that might bring me heartache after heartache.
  2. THe best thing about Petite resigning is that it takes the "must" out of trying to get Santana. Without Petite, the Yanks had to do whatever it takes to get Santana and the Twins were in the driver's seat. Now, the Yanks are in the driver's seat and they have the option of walking away from the table, which is the Twins worst nightmare as they need the Yanks in the bidding process to maximize their eventual deal. I also believe that the Yanks recent pullout and saying "no deal" because they are tired of waiting, is all fluff-n-bluff to work the Twins. Whether it works or not is yet to be seen. But you can bet your ass the Yanks are going to be ready to pull the trigger on some kind of deal before Santana gets away from them. I think that if the Yanks do end up with Santana, it's a given that Melky is gone (and I really like him). I believe that Hughes will be pulled off the table and Joba never was on the table. The Yanks are not parting with Cano so it would probably end up Melky, Kennedy (or Ohlendorf), and perhaps a prospective pitcher and a prospective hitter/fielder. I could live with that. Another option is to throw in Pavano (please) and pay his salary - something the Twins might like. Maybe they'd take Kei Igawa off our hands too - that's be sweet! Anyway, it's a high stakes card game and Petite gave the Yanks a decent playing hand now. The Ace-in-the-Hole for the Yanks is that Santana has to approve the deal (something he's been mum about), and I believe he personally wants to be a Yankee (hope so anyway). If so....he will end up in pinstripes one way or another.
  3. Actually....I think he's way too laid back. Probably too much pussy. He needs to get some emotion and fire up his team. No matter what he does (good or bad), he just acts like it's no big deal. I say.....take away his pussy and let him get mad and uptight!!
  4. I was watching the post-game show last night and my jaw dropped after hearing a comment by John Madden. Madden was almost at a complete loss for words as he looked down and shook his head trying to think. He said that, "the performance tonight by Umenyiora was the most dominating performance by a defensive player he had ever seen in his career". Madden named off a half dozen players that are defensive hall of famers (including LT, etc) and continued to shake his head saying, "those guys were the greatest defensive players in the history of the game and none of them ever put together a performance in a single game like this - not that he could remember". He said that Osi single handedly took out the Eagles. That's some pretty amazing accolades coming from a man who has been in football for decades and has probably witnessed 1000's of NFL games over a 50 year period. ------------------------ Interestingly, Tiki looked very uncomfortable as the broadcast analysts probed him to talk about how good the Giants played. Watching Tiki squirm as he "sorta" heaped praise on the Giants was worth that alone by staying up to watch the post game show. ------------------------- The unfortunate side effect of Osi's great game is that it overshadowed some other great defensive players: Kiwanuka (5 solo tackles / 2 asst tackles / 3 sacks), Tuck (6 solo tackles / 1 asst tackle / 2 sacks), not to mention Gibril's 10 solos / 1 asst and Pierces solid night.
  5. Geesh.....you took the words right out of my mouth....and said them better than I could. Anyway, I really believe it's time to let Strahan go. We have a lot of very hungry young men waiting in line to give it their all. There was a time when he had the fire in his belly, but that was before his womanizing, highly publicized divorce, liposuction and other plastic surgery, etc. It's time to build on a new foundation with hungry kids and let the last generation's stars retire to their mansions.
  6. Yeah....Jarret was still on the lead lap and about to be lapped so he stayed in the lane and raced. However, Busch had been all over Kenseth long before they caught up with Jarret and Kenseth had been mirror driving for a dozen laps because his car had faded. When a driver mirror drives and there's only a few laps left.....the faster cars will always bump you out of the way so they can continue to race. I'm surprised that Kenseth didn't give Jarret a bump as well. He deserved one and all the announcers expected him to do so. Racers get impatient when they are forced to drive much slower than they've been going and can't go faster because someone is mirror-driving. In my opinion....everything that happened was exactly the way it should have happened.....although Kenseth taking out Gordon was a cheap shot because Gordon clearly had a faster car and Kenseth was simply pissed that his car was fading so quickly.
  7. It's called racing.....and bumping and shoving on small tracks is common and necessary.....otherwise everyone just gets in line and stays that way throughout the entire race. I'm not a fan of Gordon, but I do respect the man's driving ability. He's the real deal when it comes to being called a "racer"....even if you hate the guy.
  8. I agree. It sucks in my opinion. It will suck even more once they add Toyota to the traditionally all American race. I can hardly listen to Daryl Waltrip since he took the millions from Toyota to be their spokesman and push their product. I want to keep it GM-Dodge-Ford, the same as it's been since it's inception. Standardized cars with a new foreign manufacturer will not help NASCAR IMO.
  9. Thanks for the heads up on "aka" vs. "a la". I knew that.....just didn't follow my brain. I also agree that a WR is most likely for an offensive pick. After sending my post and rereading it I thought about it and wondered why I didn't add WR. I was too lazy to edit it and add it. I agree with you on EA. I think he's become a pretty astute drafter after some hard knocks early in his career. I think he puts a tremendous amount of faith in his coaches and scouts, which is a good thing. After wasting so much energy in the past trying to figure out what the Giants will do on draft day, I now simply wait and see what they do and start analyzing once the picks are made. Too frustrating the other way!
  10. When was free agency settled??? As far as mock drafts go.....I think that (after participating in mock drafts for the Giants for the past 7 ot 8 years), that no team in the NFL is less predictable than the Giants when it comes to draft day. In my opinion (for what it's worth), there are several things in this year's draft that the Giants will do: 1) They will concentratrate on defense - DT, LB, CB, safties etc. My bet is that they'll draft 5 defensive players out of 7 picks, with the odd picks going to beef up the offensive line or perhaps grab a running back with the potential to be Tiki's successor. 2) with the 25th overall pick in the first round, the Giants will probably pick a player that most people think could have been taken in the 2nd or 3rd round. After months of bitter complaining about Ernie....Giants' fans will fall in love with the guy (aka Osi) 3) there will be at least one pick from a Div II or Div III school that shocks everyone and all the Giants' fans will be googling a name they never heard of before in order to figure out who the guy is...(aka, Osi, Shianco, Jacobs, etc.) 4) Every mock draft out there on the Giants will be 100% wrong. 5) The Giants have one of the best team of scouts in the NFL and only choose players based on scouts/coaches input rather than look at a single magazine mock draft (which they will entirely ignore), even though magazine/internet fan sites, etc., will all have basically the same players rated nearly the same. 6) After a couple of days of bitching and moaning about the inept Ernie picks.....fans will start loving their newest players and calling Ernie a genius. In general, all mock drafts are totally useless. The most accurate mock drafts in the past have had about 5 or 6 picks right in the entire 1st round and it's usually like 4 or 5 picks in the first 10 and dead wrong after that on all, but 1 or 2 picks. There will be some players mocked to go in the first that won't go until the 2nd or 3rd and maybe not even at all. Also, there will be players mocked to go in the second/third that will be picked up in the first round. There will be players picked up in the second and third rounds that are listed on no one's mock drafts at any round. There will be players mocked to picked in the second round that don't get drafted at all and fans in front of TV's will spend the whole draft screaming at the TV telling Ernie to pick up that guy. Mock drafts are for fantasizing only and combines don't measure "heart", nor do they measure "attitude" and "style" that impresses coaches. Scouts and coaches look for something special in a player that fits their own scheme or future goals. Any pick can be a bust and any pick can be tomorrow's superstar.....and that can happen in any round.
  11. The Dodge cars have had some real aerodynamic problems since they switched from Intrepid to Chargers. NASCAR has denied Dodge the opportunity to change the nose in order to fix the problems, which is a story that is pretty well published. But now, Dodge has won two races in a row.....one on a long super-speedway and another on a short track. Does this mean that the problems are finally gone? Personally, I don't think so. How is it that Chevy has become the dominant race car? What's that much different about Chevy that makes them more competititve? Lastly, what does everyone think of the new "CoT" ("Car of Tomorrow") or sometimes called, "CoF" (NASCAR "Car of the Future") that is being tested this year and supposedly will become mandatory sometime over the next 3 years? Personally, I think it's ugly and I don't like it, but I also have only seen a few pictures of it. I don't like the split front end. Anyway, from what I can tell, every car will be bascally identical regardless of manufacturere and the grill design of each manufacturer is simply painted on.
  12. 1) Kurt raced hard and towards the end of the race (about 4 laps to go), his car was much faster than Kenseth's. So Kenseth tried blocking him for a few laps while holding up traffic bad enough that Busch was in danger of getting taken out from behind. So with a couple laps to go, Busch nudged Kenseth causing him to slide out a little bit and Busch took off never to be gotten near to again. 2) Yes. Kenseth's car wasn't competitive at all so he kept trying to block everyone coming up the same way he had been blocking Busch. When Gordon got around him, Kenseth went into the turn hard enough to bang into the back of Gordon to spin him out. It was blatant. Kenseth was simply angry because all the cars around him were much faster and he tried to win by blocking. He's lucky someone didn't put him into the wall hard to get him off the track. 3) I didn't see the whole race as I was trying to keep up with the basketball games. I did watch him wreck Truex though and it was blatant. Truex was angry at Gordon and wanted to spin him out. Stewart was right behind Gordon when they caught up with Truex (who was several laps down). Truex had been moving out of the way for the rest of the drivers as lapped cars should, but decided not to give an inch to Gordon. Gordon tried to go to the outside of Truex who then went high and pinched him against the wall. Stewart was right behind Truex and let it go on for a couple of laps. Finally, Stewart decided it was time to get Truex off the track before all 3 of them got caught up in a wreck. So coming into a turn, Stewart simply gased it and took Truex out who hit the wall very hard. Truex had it coming and would have been blackflagged if not for Stewart taking things into his own hands. 4) Not really sure. Jimmy Johnson had had an altercation before the green flag that had his fender pushed in. I think it was the fender that cut his tire. I didn't see any debris and there weren't any yellow flags to rid the track of debris. I think racing on concrete is hard on tires....specially the really hard banked tracks.
  13. What a nasty wreck. The way that Indy cars disintegrate when they crash it's amazing anyone walks away from a wreck. I can't believe the guy he hit didn't get killed as well.
  14. George Mason sure looks as if destiny is on their side. Nova is the only number 1 seed left. I don't think there's ever been a final four in which alll 4 no. 1's were gone. We could be seeing history in the makin!
  15. I certainly hope they bring their "A" game today because they can't continue to win bringing their "C" game and waiting for a huge "lucky break", or a "bad call" in their favor, or the other team running out of gas down the stretch. They've been very, very fortunate in this tournament. If they bring their "A" game though....no team in the country can beat them (IMHO)! Well......as I've always said......any team can beat another team on any given day when they are hitting threes like they are foul shots being taken by your best foul shooter. It always sucks when the other team beats your team by raining down 25+ "treys" that go through the hoop. Hell, I watched SU lose to Pitt a couple of years ago when the Pitt guards could make hook shots from half court all day long.....man that pisses a guy off!!! There's nothing a team can do when a team gets that hot from behind the arc. IMO.....UConn can win this game if they concentrate on protecting the ball, very strong defense and strong rebounding. If they try to rely primarily on offense, then they will just keep turning the ball over like they did against Washington because GM is a great defensive team in the mold of UCLA. When a team decides it's going to win the game with defense, the offense just works itself out.
  16. It would appear after last nights win over Washington, that UConn likes to wait until there is almost no time left in the game to get serious. I'm rooting for UConn to go all the way (or Nova if UConn fails), but it would sure be nice to see them put together 40 quality minutes of play instead of 5
  17. I believe the Giants are focusing on defense through free agency. I think Grady Jackson being signed by the Giants is a given and I also will not be one bit surprised if we still sign Lavar and there are several sources mentioning that the Giants are talking with Woodson. If we signed those 3 guys, I'd have to take a cold shower to recover!! If we do sign those players, expect the Giants to concentrate on picking the "best" player available (except QB) in each round of the draft as there will be no immediate needs. I expect the Giants to throw their first 3 picks on a DT, OT, and then possibly a WR or LB (depending on who's left on the board). Also, the Giants are famous for plucking a gem out of the small schools (Simms, Osi, Jacobs, etc.) so expect at least one small school prospect taken a couple of rounds earlier than expected. For what it's worth......there has been talk of the Giants trading up to get D'Brickashaw Ferguson (OT from Virginia) or Eric Winston (OT Miami). I don't put a lot of stock in rumors, but I'd be delighted if either of those two guys put on the blue.
  18. Boy.....UConn likes to make sure their fans chew their nails off don't they??? Oh well, at least they finally knocked off UK. To me....there is never more pressure than when you absolutely have to make foul shot after foul shot in the last minute of the game. UConn did well at the stripe. As far as being the first "1" to lose to a "16", let us pray that in the future it's Duke.
  19. Hey my friend........bet you were sweating a few bullets last night heh?????? At least they came back....more than I can say for my lethargic orange
  20. the Big East should've had 9 teams in the tourney and anyone who follows college ball knows this is a fact. Cincinatti (the team that spanked LSU - a 4 seed) is out.....yet Air Force is in????? George Mason is in??? both which are "at bid" teams because neither won their regular conference season title nor won their tourney in leagues that for all practical purposes should be in Division III......Give me a break. Do we really need the Colonial Conference represented twice? or the Mountain West conference twice. Secondary teams from tertiary conferences who never played a top 100 team all year, while Cincy had the 5th toughest non-conference schedule in the nation together with the toughest conference competition all year??? The only reason Cincy isn't in the tourney is because the committee didn't want one more Big East team in....it's as simple as that.
  21. Blow me!!!!! Not one to make excuses, but last year's early exit came as Syracuse had benched one starter and the first man off their bench for disciplinary reasons in that game (actually, for the entire tournament had they gone on). The two were not even allowed to suit up. Furthermore, it was the worst officiated game I have ever seen in my life and I have seen plenty in my day. Syracuse played flat that day, but even flat they should've won that game easilyl. Syracuse was called for more than 20 "touch" fouls, yet two behemoths draped Hakim Warrick and body slammed him to the ground several times with nary a whistle. He left the game once because he was bleeding profusely. The refs apparantly decided that Vermont was such an underdog that they needed the referees' help by calling anything that even remotely looked like a foul on SU, but conveniently never calling fouls on the other team. It was like one of those high school games where the refs' kids are playing and they aren't going to lose no matter what. I know it sounds like sour grapes, but that game was just plain awful and the refs made sure that Vermont would win. Somebody (or more than one) lined their pockets that game! Regardless......the Syracuse Orange are this years "BIG EAST CHAMPS"!!!! Expect to see them in the sweet 16 and maybe more. It would be a good year for 4 Big East teams to be in the final four. That would rock
  22. Is this not the greatest Big East Tournament since the days of Ewing, Pearl, Mullins, Pickney, Worthy, etal and legendary coaches like Louie, Rollie, Boeheim, and Big John? I remember those days like it was yesterday when teams limped off the floor with blood on their jerseys after spontaneous fist fights and hatred so deep you could taste it..............ahhhhhh, the good old days. Big East is back babyyyy! Bye, bye ACC!
  23. They are surprising me. I think all the negative things said about McNamara by the rest of the league (calling him an "average player", ignoring him in the voting, etc.) has inspired Gerry to prove all his naysayers wrong. Regardless, for me anyway....it's just plain nice to SU playing like they're hungry for a change. Still, UConn is a great team with a real shot at another national championship. I, of course, thought it was a great game today (and yesterday too!)
  24. Ryan Newman or his teammate Kurt Busch is about due for a big win. Last week they screwed up trying to race with the old Intrepid. They won't make that mistake this coming weekend.
