Sudbury Wolves' defenceman Marc Staal, who signed a contract with the New York Rangers after being drafted in the first round of the 2005 draft, will join the Rangers in the next few days, once immigration paper work is cleared up.

The Wolves were eliminated from the OHL playoffs earlier this week. The Rangers had hoped to have Staal in their lineup tonight, but immigration hurdles prevented that.

If all goes well, Staal could be in the Rangers’ lineup as early as Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Korpikoski signs with Rangers.

Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club agreed to terms on a professional contract with forward Lauri Korpikoski, the 19th overall selection in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Korpikoski, 19, helped lead Finland to a bronze medal at the 2006 (U-20) World Junior Championships, collecting six points in seven games. He ranked second on the team and tied for fifth among all players in the tournament with five assists, while his six points tied for second on the Finnish Team.

This season, he skated in 51 games with TPS Turku of the SM-Liiga (Finland), registering three goals and four assists, along with 16 penalty minutes. In two postseason contests with the club, Korpikoski collected one assist.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has appeared in 92 career regular season games with TPS Turku, collecting three goals and 10 assists for 13 points, along with 28 penalty minutes. Prior to becoming the youngest player on TPS Turku in 2004-05, Korpikoski skated with TPS Turku Jr. teams for three-plus seasons, recording 32 goals and 19 assists, along with 32 penalty minutes in 74 games.

Internationally, he also represented his country at the 2005 (U-20) and 2004 (U-18) World Junior Championships. In the 2004 U-18 tournament, Korpikoski tallied five goals and six assists, along with a plus-seven rating in six games. Among all players in the tournament, he tied for first in points (11) and assists (six), tied for third in plus/minus (plus-seven) and tied for fourth in goals (five).
