Cullen Jenkins: Giants restructure DT Jenkins' contract

The Giants and DT Cullen Jenkins agreed to restructure his contract, clearing $825,000 against the salary cap.

Jenkins, 34, was originally scheduled to count $2.917 million against the cap and was in danger of potentially losing his roster spot. He started 11 games this past season as the pocket-pushing interior lineman next to NT Johnathan Hankins. Jenkins is a part-time rotational player at this stage of his career.

Cool, I like Jenkins as part of the rotation.

Hankins, Jenkins, Bromley, Rookie, Kuhn?.

I'm hoping the Giants go after Stephen Paea in free agency

Don't know anything about him.. from what I read Chicago's run defense sucked. I just don't think the DT position is in need of a FA pickup when there are other more pressing needs.

Well they could still wind up cutting him later on which they should. 2013 was last time he was effective and at his age might have been the last time. You have a problem at DT when Markus Kuhn is starting. The guy is strictly a backup by every measurable stat.

I'm keeping an open mind. I don't think our last DC brought out the best in players.

And Jenkins can play DE as well.

Really? That rotation sucked... We were dead last in YPC last year.

Opponents were gashing us on the outside--JPP had a nasty habit of collapsing towards the center on rushing plays. Constantly. Regardless of what was happening during the play.

That left the devastating presence of Williams to cover the outside.

Sure, an upgrade at DT wouldn't hurt. But we need DEs and OLBs much, much more.

It was a paycut.

He agreed to a new deal that included a pay cut that could range anywhere from $700,000 to $1.2 million if he's on the roster this season.

Defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, whose roster spot was thought to be on the bubble due to his age and salary, has agreed to a pay cut and will return to the Giants in 2015.

What this means is that the Giants got Jenkins, who has only one year left on his deal, to take a pay cut

I don't know, Fish... The DT looked like chumps at times against the run.
