Andrew Luck dropped a bombshell during the preseason.

The Indianapolis Colts quarterback is stunningly retiring from the NFL, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported. Luck informed the team of his plans to walk away and confirmed the news in a presser on Saturday night.

ESPN first reported the news.

"This is not an easy decision. Honestly, it's the hardest decision of my life. But it is the right decision for me," Luck told reporters after Indianapolis' preseason game Saturday night. "For the last four years or so, I've been in this cycle of injury, pain, rehab, injury, pain, rehab, and it's been unceasing, unrelenting, both in-season and offseason, and I felt stuck in it. The only way I see out is to no longer play football."

Wild. Unreal. Crazy. Insane. Unbelievable. Nuts. Use whatever exclamatory word you want, it's a berserk story that dropped as the Colts were in the middle of their preseason game versus the Chicago Bears. As news leaked, TV broadcasts showed the QB on the sideline talking with backup-turned-starter Jacoby Brissett and other teammates.

The 29-year-old former franchise signal-caller has dealt with a plethora of injuries the past several seasons, including a shoulder issue that wiped out all of his 2017 season.

Luck bounced back with a fantastic 2018 campaign, throwing for 4,593 passing yards, tossing 39 touchdowns and leading Indy to the playoffs. If not for Patrick Mahomes' ridiculous season, Luck could have been a candidate to win the MVP last year.

Another offseason, however, was disrupted by injury. Luck began dealing with a calf injury back in April. The issue continued to nag the QB into training camp and was finally revealed to be an ankle injury.

All the injuries wore on Luck, and he decided to take his ball and go home.

"I've been stuck in this process. I haven't been able to live the life I want to live," Luck said. "Taken the joy out of this game, and after 2016, when I played in pain and was unable to regularly practice, I made a vow to myself that I would not go down that path again, I find myself in a similar situation and the only way forward for me is to remove myself from football and this cycle that I've been in.

"I've come to the proverbial fork in the road. I made a vow to myself that if I ever did again, I would choose the innocence."

The former No. 1 overall pick, entered the NFL as the epitome of a franchise quarterback owning the size, arm, intelligence, demeanor and grit. Luck immediately boosted the Colts from the cellar of the NFL to the playoffs. With a less-than-ideal offensive line in front of him, Luck helped drag Indy to the playoffs the first three seasons of his career.

After seven seasons, the Colts finally seemed poised to have the ideal team surrounding Luck to make a Super Bowl push. The injuries, however, wiped away those plans.

Luckily for Indy, Brissett is a starting-caliber quarterback and will take over full-time duties.

But there is no way to slice it, Luck leaving the NFL before turning 30 years old in less than a month is the most stunning retirement in history.

I'm reading this story and when it gets to the part detailing the injury he had to deal with this offseason: Calf Injury/Ankle Injury...

He retires 2 weeks from the beginning of the NFL season because of an ankle injury.

Guess when you're just injured every offseason it gets to you or made him clearly lose passion for the game.

Could be worse reports are they still didn't have any idea what the injury clearly was.

My bet he just milked it to see if he wanted to still play in the NFL.

The Colts are not going after any part of the bonus he's already received.

The Colts wish they had their quarterback back. But they're not asking for their money back.
Indianapolis will not recoup any of the $16.8 million Andrew Luck owes the team in the wake of his stunning retirement Saturday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.
The Colts' franchise QB was entering Year 3 of a five-year extension that was the biggest contract in NFL history when signed in 2016.

Two team executives who handle contract negotiations and salary-cap matters for their clubs told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo that Indy could take back $12.8 million in signing-bonus proration as well as a $4 million prorated roster bonus. Because Luck has three years left on his contract, only one-third of the $12 million roster bonus he earned in March would be considered recoupable.
Luck initially strained his calf in March and subsequently missed OTAs and minicamp. He briefly participated in training camp before being sidelined again. Little did we know, it was for good.
The gesture is well deserved for a quarterback who won the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award in 2018 after missing the entire 2017 season because of a shoulder injury. Luck, the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, led the Colts to four playoff berths in six seasons.

Not only has he been fighting injuries for a couple seasons, the dude comes from a wealthy family, so its not like he is one of the guys who NEEDED football.. so he had to wake up after taking another beating, and not wanting/needing to do that anymore.

Not to mention imagine going through what Eli did in the first 10 weeks of the year in terms of Oline play.

And now do it for over 5 years.

That's what Luck had to deal with.

I have no problem with him losing his passion for the game when you are a human pinata for the team that has made you the franchise.

Eli had it worse, he's playing this year. 150 to 133 sacks over the last five years.

Eli Manning is the human pinata for every arm chair QB since 2004.

Well I mean Luck didn't even play full seasons the last 5 years due to the hits he has taken.

Not mention Luck is way more mobile than Eli, if he was as slow as Eli he probably wouldnt of made it to year four lol

I think Eli's has had worse OLs than Luck throughout his career. Eli is just that much more durable and that yoga ballet stretching shit that he does before every game really prepares him to take hits and avoid injuries. A true Iron man if there ever was one. If our piss poor coaching staff hadnt benched him for no fucking reason....the streak would have.....ah fuck it!
