Matt Stover, the Ravens' kicker for their entire existence, said last night that he is no longer wanted by the team. Stover, a free agent, said he approached the Ravens with an offer he had received from the New York Jets on Monday. The Ravens informed him they were moving on, according to the kicker, 41, the only player remaining from the team's relocation from Cleveland. "At that point, we knew for sure their direction was not to keep me," Stover told The Baltimore Sun last night. "They want to go in another direction." The Jets eventually signed Jay Feely, leaving Stover without a team. According to a team source, the Ravens consider Stover a fallback option. If the Ravens aren't comfortable with their kicker situation, they could ask Stover to return before the regular season begins, the source said.

And no one really wants to go into the season with a rookie kicker....no matter how good he does in practice. So they prefer to pick up veterans on the cheap who won't screw up under the intense scrutiny or have his head in his ass from the glamour of playing in the NFL in front of millions of viewers. I'd be surprised if the kickers that were taken will all be released before the season begins. Some will be held on the practice team, but any other team can take a practice team player as long as they want to put them on their main roster....which is unlikely.

Meanwhile we have two vet kickers on our roster. That extension given to Tynes was the one big mistake Reese has made so far, that I can think of anyway.

I think you are right BB, but Gano was so good. His accuracy from 50+ was amazing... and he made them look easy. He's even as good a punter as a kicker, too. And pressure, FSU fans know all about pressure with kickers, because so many 'Noles kickers have crumbled under the pressure even when they were easy kicks. We've experienced a LOT of heartbreak from kickers folding under pressure, and Gano came in and was the best thing since Janikowski. Every time he lined up for a big one, he hit. With all the history of disappointment at FSU in relation to kickers, Gano could've easily crumbled under that added pressure. Instead, he really shined brightly.

 

I went to FSU's bowl game against Wisconsin and he was the best player on the field and was the MVP of the game! Amazing for a K/P.

And with a new stadium opening next year, no vet or rookie is going to be familiar with it, so why not just start fresh?

i think the success ratio is pretty much the same across the board on field goals and kickoffs. some guys have good years but they basically reach the same accuracy level. So your return on investment would not be that high.

Yeah the issue is that kickers are pretty much interchangable. There isn't the same production fall-off as there is with RBs or WRs.

I think a Cb and maybe a S have a real good shot of making this roster as an UDFA. Imagine being a DE or DT coming to camp with this team?

I hate those DE to LB conversions as most became three point stance guys because they could not cover a chick with a blanket much less a back or TE. Kiwi has been the most successful I have seen.

well there is Clark, Boley, Wilkinson, Goff, Kehl, Pierce, DeOssie, Blackburn, and now Simtin, so who knows. Certainly not the big blue wrecking crew but some nice players in there who showed something last year, particularly Kehl.

We have zero starters at WR, doggy, at this point we need as many as possible simply to provide competition. Hixon=not a starter. Smith=good slot guy. Moss=well, you all no how you feel about Moss....Manningham=untested etc etc.

I was going over some of the small school prospects on a variety of links that I followed (predraft) and found this on NFL Prospects.com

 

They listed 7 head turners from small schools with genuine NFL potential. Anyway, here it is:

 

TE Darius Hill, 6' 5" 235 lbs. Ball State 4.64:

He set a school record for a tight end with ten touchdown catches in 2006. Word has it he may move from TE to WR this year. It is possible this may hurt his draft stock somewhat but with good hands and speed. He has run in the 4.64 40 yard dash range. He should be taken in the middle rounds a potential TE prospect or WR project if he can get his 40 time down into the 4.55 range.

 

They also listed Ramses Barden of course.

 

Anyway, Hill was signed by the Giants from the undrafted rookie class

Otis Wiley

Position: SS

School & Year/Status: Michigan St. - Senior

Height & Weight: 6'2 - 210 lbs

 

Otis Wiley was the unquestioned leader of the Michigan State defense in 2008. Wiley became a starter late in his freshman year because of injury, and hasn't looked back. He plays the strong safety spot for the Spartans, but his size and speed may make him a candidate to play free safety in the NFL as well. Wiley is a sure tackler, having a career best 94 stops during his sophomore season. In 47 career games, Wiley has registered 239 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 9 interceptions, broken up an impressive 22 passes in coverage, and even forced 4 fumbles. Wiley also packs some big play ability as shown by his two interception return touchdowns. Wiley has good size, good speed, and great instincts in coverage. He may not be as physically impressive as some of these other 2009 hopefuls, but he gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Wiley possesses the tools to play either safety spot in the NFL, providing a team valuable depth. His 14.1 yards per return average returning punts gives him some versatility, and his sure tackling could make him a special teams standout. Last but not least, it will be tough to find a strong safety in all of college football better at playing man coverage on a receiver. Unfortunately for him, this year's safety class is shaping up to be a deep one, which may cost him. However, the team that does draft Wiley, even if he slips to the fourth or fifth round, may find they got a steal.

Otis Wiley ran a 4.64 40 yard dash at his Pro Day at Michigan State. That's a little slower than expected, but not too terrible for a strong safety. He could be a late fourth-to-mid fifth round pick and would fit nicely for a team running the cover 2.

Yeah....he was suspended from the team because after someone reported loud music coming from his apartment, police went in and found him and another friend along with a bag of weed.

 

So he's a "bad boy" that was disregarded during the draft. I don't think he played a snap in his junior year because he was on probation.

 

Here's some background on his playing ability:

 

Evans was an immediate contributor in 2006 as a true freshman, seeing action in all 13 games. He recorded 12 tackles (7 solo), 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He would be named to the First Team of the Sporting News's the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. In 2007—Evans' first starting season at defensive end—Evans recorded 12.5 sacks (including 3.5 against Indiana). He was a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award as a sophomore.

 

By the start of the 2008 season Evans was had been named to numerous preseason All-American teams, including Phil Steele's All American first team. He is was also on the 2008 Bednarik, Lombardi, and Nagurski award watchlists. However, he did not play his junior year.

The list of UFA's coming to Giants camp is up to 15 as of today.

 

I've been reading up on some of the undrafted free agents to see what's cooking on the Giants roster. The last player picked up today was Tremaine Goddard - a strong safety out of North Carolina. I was reading the Redskins board and went back over their draft chatter and several of the fans were begging for them to draft Goddard and one of the fans who followed NC closely said he reminded him so much of Sean Taylor.

 

Another interesting site lists the "Holy Cow" of who didn't get drafted.

 

Another prospect scouting report lists Goddard the same as Patrick Chung, whom the Patriots burned their first pick on in this years draft (2nd round).

 

Anyway....in most draft sources that lists players by position have Goddard in the top 3 - 5 spots for that position. Otis Wiley is listed in the top 10 for safeties.

 

Anyway....I know it doesn't mean much, but it's interesting to get some insight on the players coming into Giants camp this year.
