Only 9% of New Yorkers claim Giants as favorite team

The recent poll numbers released by Sienna College shows that the people of New York claim their favorite team to be:

Yankees - 27%

Mets - 12%

Giants - 9%

Bills - 4%

Sabres - 4%

Boston Red Sox - 3%

Knicks - 2%

Syracuse Orange, NY Jets, NY Rangers between 1-2%

Islanders didn't even make the top 10.

------------------------------

Interesting numbers. I don't know what is more surprising.....that only 9% consider the Giants their favorite team....or that the Red Sox are more popular than the Knicks (a storied franchise that used to own NYC), or that the Buffalo Bills or the Buffalo Sabres have more fans than the Jets and Rangers combined.

It doesn't completely surprise me that the Knicks have fallen from the fans' grace. Isaiah Thomas has utterly destroyed the team from top to bottom......unable to win even a handful of games....coupled with trading away lottery picks year after year for broken down has-beens who make 10 times more than they're worth to keep the cap room flooded for years to come.

I am glad to see that the poll shows that the Giants are more popular than the Bills and the Jets combined as maybe the TV producers will finally get it when there is a conflict of games and they have to choose between airing the Bills, Jets, or Giants.

His name was Wayne Gretzky. We could argue till we have carple-tunnel, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Agreed. Shit, I remember when I used to play football 10 years ago and kids

were actually leaving football to play hockey. You'd never see that now a days.

Hockey just isn't popular...it gets no face time in New York City (I couldn't tell

you the last time their was hockey on the back page of the Post or Daily News)

and rarely any face time on ESPN or any other big media outlet.

It's a sport that doesn't translate to television, unless you are a diehard fan. Watching a game live is rush, and playing the game is an even bigger rush. I've been a goalie for the last 10 years, and still remember the first time I stonewalled a guy on a breakaway. A lot of people like to be that sniper or big hitter, but I love the feeling of snatching the puck out of the air and then seeing the "how the fuck did he do that?" look on everybody's face.

Plus, as a a goalie, you can get away with some tripping calls that you would normally get called for if you were a skater out on the ice.

You think golf translates to television?

I've been to a couple Rangers games in my life time and they were a bore to be quite

honest. I've tried to like it, I made a valid attempt to in 1998 when basketball was on

strike for half a year and I just couldn't for the life of me get into it.

I found a backpage where hockey is somewhat on the back page, but it is overshadowed

by Plaxico's "We're better than the Pats receivers"

Wasn't that guy like one of the best Rangers ever or something like that?

Brian Leetch. He was MVP of the series when they won the cup in 94. A lot of hearts were broken when he was traded away.

I watched a lot of games when the Rangers won the cup, so I root for them qyuietly. But honestly, hockey boresd me to tears. And i have given it every opportunity to win me over. I have heard that it is much better live though, lots of people have told me that.

Golf on the other hand, i basically roo6t for tiger to lose and Daly to do well.

Personally, I used to be a HUGE kincks fan. I completely shut off the knicks out of my life when Jeff Van Gundy walked out. I think I can name one or two players on the current roster.. and couldn't careless about an organization that's clueless from head to toe. That Isiah piece of shit is a disgrace.

I don't get hockey.. but that's typical because I wasn't exposed to it... much like most people here don't get soccer. I'll admit to watching the Rangers' last game to win the championship in 1994... man that was thrilling.

I don't mind if this survey shows the G-men as "not the favorite" of NY/NJ. Frankly, I don't care that much because that's a survey of New Yorkers.

I'm a rabid G fan and I'm not a New Yorker. In fact, like many Giants fans, I'm a transplant that still holds true to where he came from and so that survey doesn't accurately measure popularity, only reported numbers from a limited survey for a limited area.

SHould the Giants be New York/New Jersey's team, sure: the Bills have never won it and the Jets haven't won it since most of us where still ballbaggers.

my poor islanders...just wait we'll prove everybody wrong one of these seasons..lol...but thats an interesting poll..

they just got eliminated from the play offs. Tough luck, old sport. ;)

I think the Rangers have fans across the State into Jersey and Pennsylvannia. The Icelanders are basically only on luong eyelund. Hockey is pretty much a specialist sport only watched by real enthusiasts with a passion for a sport they consider their own and some mullet wearing hooligans.
