RGIII's benching highlights failures of 2012 draft class By Chris Wesseling

Robert Griffin III's most recent benching will prevent NFL fans from witnessing the first head-to-head matchup of quarterbacks taken with the first two picks in the same draft since Peyton Manning's Colts defeated Ryan Leaf's Chargers in 1998.

Griffin's spectacular fall from grace highlights the futility of the top of the 2012 NFL Draft.

As you can see from the table below, No. 1 pick -- and Colts franchise cornerstone -- Andrew Luck is the only one of the top seven selections living up to expectations.

Pick, Player, team 2014 status

1 QB Andrew Luck, Colts Top-10 MVP candidate

2 QB Robert Griffin III, Redskins Benched for second time, clear regression as a QB

3 RB Trent Richardson, Colts Least effective running back the past two years

4 OT Matt Kalil, Vikings Has allowed more sacks than any player this year

5 WR Justin Blackmon, Jaguars Suspended indefinitely

6 CB Morris Claiborne, Cowboys Benched, then tore patellar tendon

7 S Mark Barron, Rams Traded by Bucs for fourth- and sixth-round picks

Beyond Luck, No. 9 pick Luke Kuechly, No. 11 pick Dontari Poe and No. 21 pick Chandler Jones have proven to be the best of the first-round selections.

The 2013 group isn't faring much better than its 2012 counterparts. Of the top dozen 2013 draft picks, Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah (No. 5) is the lone player flashing star potential.

On the bright side, this year's first-round draft class -- particularly at wide receiver -- looks especially promising.

How bad is he? I don't watch any games besides Giants ones anymore.

Bad enough to have Colt McCoy be the Redskins future QB.

I have a couple buddies who are redskins fans, they have told me ever since RG3 has been out of Shannys gimmick offense (and not on the injured list as well) he's basically regressed in every aspect a QB can.

I'll tell you what though if RG3 is on another team next offseason he'll go down as the biggest draft bust in history.

Trading away what? Three first round picks and a third? For a guy who was on your team for three years.

So the terrible draft we had in 2012 was league-wide?

hmmmm... http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d828ed138/article/bengals-patriots-giants-chiefs-ace-2012-nfl-draft

I'm not saying by any stretch we had a good draft that year, but there might be a lot of hindsight going into our judgements, something Reese didn't have the benefit of back in 2012.

Been hurt most of the season he plays on a team with a first year coach with different expectations at QB and the offense.

To see how bad it is read this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/11/19/chris-cooley-rgiii-was-so-bad-i-cant-assess-the-rest-of-the-redskins-offense/

He's making the OLine look much worse than it is and missing easy reads. The guy is done.

i said it his rookie season. they were protecting him and now they're not

That, and his mechanics are terrible. He's a kid who has spent his entire football career moving around the pocket, throwing on the run, and using his legs to make plays. You put him in the NFL where he inherently can't do as much of that because well, the guys on the other team are athletic, too...and then give him some bad wheels, it's a recipe for career that's going to go quickly downhill. The kid can't even set his feet and throw...he struggles with the most basic part of a QB's job...the drop back...he can't take a 5 step drop, make a quick read, and throw. He takes a 5 step drop and sits in the pocket. Used to be, he could do that and outrun or out-maneuver the opposition and now, when he really has to be a pocket passer, he doesn't possess the requisite skills.
