Am I the only one?

Safety was the right call, BG. Not sure where the rat is unless you're taling over/under. Don't know what that was but I've a feeling it was unaffected.

Then i'm sure you won't mind explaining how? Like I said, had he gone to the corner and kicked it from there the clock would have ticked down 2-3 more seconds. I fail to see how there is any advantage to that call.

The advantage is no threat of a short runback or a block. And he was able to take 8seconds off the clock. Free kick from the 20 is a much more controlled environment

I thought it was silly to take the safety because it meant the drop kick could tie it. Regardless, I'm in agreement with Blind, I think his option is better, and if your punter messes up while running around or is about to get tackled, you get the safety anyway. I thought if that free-punt landed anywhere shorter than the opposing 30 yard line, the 9ers would have been trying for the free kick field goal. Remember, that free kick field goal would be uncontested and I'm not even sure they have to use a holder for that kick. Shit, I would have let Akers try that kick from the 20, it was worth a short, especially since they clearly had absolutely nothing drawn up on the return.

And what the fuck was up with them not even attempting laterals, anyway? What a waste of a final last hurrah.

So it wasn't just me.

When one of the announcers (aside--thank GOD SB48 will be a Fox broadcast, Simms and Nantz suck and are as excited about the game as I was last night, which wasn't very excited) mentioned taking the safety I was definitely wondering why they would suggest bringing the score to 3 with 20 seconds on the clock. The punter running around definitely saved them because there would have been time for another play if he had just ran out the back of the end zone.

It does seem that the general consensus is that it was the right move, so I won't argue....but it is a strange one that IMO, could have backfired. Then again, actually punting it from that spot puts the 9ers probably around the 50 with a couple seconds to work with.

I gather the thinking was clock management and pinning the 49ers farther back. If the punt had been taken and let's say a 5 yard return there would have been enough time for a Hail Mary or 2; probably around 9-10 seconds left. Akers was not going to be kicking a 70 yard field goal. The real cluster fuck is that Jim didn't go all out punt block on that one and at least make a quick safety. He ran basically uncontested. John out coached his brother and there were times where the 49ers look like they were ready to go home. That power black out at least made the game a good one at the end.

I think it was the right call.

Instead of giving the 49ers the ball back within hail marry range with guys like Moss and Davis on the team, they took more time off the clock and the 49ers only had time left for a safety return.

The thing that baffles me like Lone Wolf mentioned is that Jim didnt rush more guys after the punter when I think it was obvious he was running around with the ball, heck the punter took what? 8-10 seconds off the clock just by running around? You think the 49ers would of been smart enough to tell the guys to rush the punter so he didnt have any time to run.

The same thing happens quite often in the CFL, teams elect for a safety and to run the clock down by running the punter/kicker in the endzone, granted the CFL endzones are 20 yards deep and there is more room to run.

Best intentional safety I've ever seen was in a high school game probably 20 years ago now. My high school was playing one of the toughest games of the year. They were winning 3-0 with little time left. They took an intentional safety with under a minute remaining. They held on to win the game 3-2. Went on to the state championship that year.

Not only that you'd think they would be going all out punt block anyway. John definitely out coached his brother in the SB. To be honest I think Jim shit the bed on more than one occasion in that game. Probably too busy crying about something to remember he still has a game to coach.

We only had 4 wins on the season, but one of them was to the NY football Giants and another to the world champion Baltimore Ravens. That HAS to hurt coming from a dumbass Eagle fan. :LMAO:

Both Pennsylvania games should have been wins...the Egals snafu where an inexplicable play was called that basically fostered the beginning of Haggis Hammers doubts and the loss to the Stealers...those two games should have been in the win column. It was especially criminal in the Egals game...whoever made that call....no fuck that its on Eli for going ahead with that ill advised throw when all you are trying to do is line up for the FG...or just throw a high percentage pass to a back or TE...but no we have to get greedy...what PI...what's wrong with you Chowderhead...now go sit in the doghouse....But but it would have been intercepted because Easy E so badly underthrew it.....Coughlin I don't give a shit go sit in the doghouse now....good play Gilly you're my resident offensive genius... :P

9ers should of had 11 men on the line a forced the rush and maybe in turn causing the Punter to fumble and try to recover it for a td. or they could of forced a shank. but it was probably more unlikely seeing the Punter was intent on going out of bounds when he had to. But, if they could of gotten to the punter and hit him and forced a fumble and recovery they would go on top. Or if there was a muffed snap same scenario.
