Guard Geoff Schwartz restructures contract after injury-plagued first season with Giants

The Giants didn’t get much of a return on their big investment in guard Geoff Schwartz last season, since injuries limited him to only two games.

So this year, they’re going to make him earn his money.

The Giants slashed Schwartz’s 2015 salary by $2 million, according to NFL Players Association records, reducing it from $3.675 million to $1.675 million. They did give him the opportunity to earn $1.5 million of that back in “per-game roster bonuses.” So if Schwartz can remain healthy and on the active roster all season, it won’t be much of a pay cut at all.

But that suddenly is a big “if” for the 6-6, 340 pounder. After missing only three games in his first four NFL seasons, Schwartz dislocated his toe in a preseason game and missed the first 11 games of the season. When he returned, he played two games before suffering a serious ankle injury that required surgery and landed him on injured reserve.

That wasn’t exactly what the Giants were hoping for when they gave Schwartz a four-year, $16.8 million deal last March and made him the centerpiece of their offensive line rebuilding project. Schwartz is still expected to be a starting guard for the Giants on Opening Day, though, assuming he’s healthy.

The restructuring of Schwartz’s deal cleared about $2.1 million in salary cap space for the Giants. They now have $9,157,931 in room under the $143.28 million NFL salary cap.
