Question for Mets fans

are you guys going to pick a new team to root for for the next ten years or so, or will you just stop watching baseball all together?

As much as I love baseball, if the Yankees were heading in the direction the Mets are, Id just stop watching baseball...well after June at least

Nope I wont change my loyalties over a lousy season. I don't agree that they are heading towards the wrong direction but they should change things firstly by firing the GM and manager. You still can't help those injuries.

noble of you..I agree, the GM and manager need to go. Then they need to make some trades. The Marlins and Braves are stacked with young talent, both on the mound and at the plate and the phillies are the phillies. The Mets, even when fully heatlhy next year are still the 4th best team in that division....and if the Nats ever develop their young talent into big league players, the Mets will be the worst team in that division.

Bad draft picks, bad trade, bad FA signings, bad contract extensions have really destroyed the Mets. This was the Mets year to go to the WS and the entire team got hurt. I know Im a yankee fan and all, but if I were a Mets fan, Id be very worried about the team going foward.

blu, I live in the NY metro area, where we have 2 teams and both are covered in the news..Im sure you get you fair share of A's news up in San Fag.

not really. back to the topic at hand- people who give up on their teams when they're down are losers or yankee fans.

I didn't know he could speak English. That would mean he read the articles the newspapers wrote about him. Poor fuck!

Where'd you go to school, anyway?

the one he came to was PS 31 in the South Bronx and he couldn't speak much English.

This idea that the Mets are a complete mess for years to come is typical of a swarming media when they hate someone(Minaya) and the douchebagginess of Yankee fans and their obsession of letting Met fans know at every oppurtunity that they are the Yankees and the Mets are not.

No doubt that Minaya and Bernazard(which WAS HIS JOB) have done an awful job of assembling talent below the major league level. This completely came to the forefront in 2009 when they lost Reyes, Delgado, Beltran, Santana, Putz and Wright for extended periods of time. The drop off in talent from the big league squad to those below it was such a contrast that what should have been an 85+ win team became an utter abomination.

What Met fans, media type, asshole Yankee fans etc do not know is what the potential of the A and AA players is at this time. There is no doubt the cupboard was bare at AAA, but there are some young players down in the system who have some potential. Fernando Martinez was nowhere near ready for the big leagues this year and that both retarded his growth and lowered his expectations. I think he has some potential and could be a valuable commodity down the road. I have seen plenty of players come up at 20 and resurface a year or 2 later when they are big league ready. I also like the potential of Jon Niese as a mid to back end option in the starting rotation. Bob Parnell has shown flashes as a reliever and a starter in terms of his stuff and ability, not necessarily the numbers. A firm grasp will have to be made in terms of where he fits in. SS Ruben Tejada had a nice year in AA and looks to be a decent prospect as a middle infielder.

My plan for 2010 would be to have a healthy and healed Reyes, Wright and Beltran back along with Franceour. Luis Castillo, who had this team played to its potential and he not been remembered for 1 error in a game in JUNE has had a very nice year, I would look to deal him. If not I can live with him at 2b in 2010. The real issues to address are a #2 starter and a bat for LF and 1B. Personally I would look to make a deal for Carl Crawford whom the Rays apparently do not want to pay and place him in LF and team him at the top of the lineup with Reyes. As for 1B I do not want Murphy unless they get a big bopper like Holliday in LF. I probably still would not want him then, so 1b is a must acquire. If they go the route of less money or want a platoon there I would not be opposed to Mark Derosa on a 2 year deal. He also could spell Castillo at 2b and allow Murphy to get some at bats at 1b when that happens. I would love to make a deal for Halladay, probably not happening so I would have my eyes set on Jason Marquis or someone like that. Reyes, Crawford, Wright, Beltran, DeRosa, Franceour, C, Castillo with Pagan and Cora as your primary OF and INF backups is not terrible. This is premature, but just some early 2010 thoughts.

I do not expect the Mets to 10 years to get good again, in fact I expect some better luck in 2010 with health and at the very least a team that competes in their division. I also hope Bryce Harpers parents bring him to the D.R. , he declares for the draft, falls to the Mets at 5 or 6 and they take him.thumbsup.gif

I was just about to say the Mets were a good team and were in the hunt before the injuries. Now, go away! We're talking about something important here.

To answer Hugh's question, yes, I have quit watching them this year. It's not just the losing, but the painful ways in which they have lost. Dropped fly balls, game ending unassisted triple plays, it seems like the Mets actually invented new ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I could no longer put myself through more Mets baseball. I have canceled my subscription to MLB.TV and will not renew next year. I will remain a fan, but they have to start showing that they are a team that is willing to play to win on a nightly basis for me to start shelling out my $19.95 a month on them again. I will watch them whenever they are on regular TV next year until that happens.

I don't see this team has the right mentality to win a lot of games. There are key players on that team that seem to lack the killer instinct. You see it on a team like the Phillies... guys like that douchebag Victorino have it... they just have this compulsion to win. Sometimes, when I see Beltran or Wright in the box with the game on the line, they look like they are afraid to lose. And you can't win that way.

Nevertheless, I think these guys are works in progress. I don't think we've seen the best of Wright or Reyes. I think Beltran can have a big year next year. I like Francouer, he is the kind of player the Mets desperately needed and he seems to have the killer instinct I was talking about.

I disagree with xxi about Murphy. The free agent 1B market this offseason is bare. Murphy is not a big power hitter, but he played a very good first base, will hit you up to 20 homeruns (that's a ceiling), but a hell of a lot of doubles. I still think he has potential to hit north of .290, and if you add all that up, that's probably better than what's out on the free agent market this offseason at 1B. However, the Mets HAVE to get a big bat for LF, the lack of power was troubling. The perfect fit is Jason Bay but I'm sure the Red Sox will do everything they can to resign him. The only other guy that would legitimately solve the problem that will be a free agent is Matt Holliday, and I think the Mets ought to do everything they can to sign him.

The one good thing about this offseason is that there will be a lot of good starting pitching, and the Mets need to address that. To me, I think you have to move Maine to the bullpen after this year, and getting a high quality starter will make the team better.

As bad as this season was, they can turn it around relatively quickly.

Murphy doesn't produce like a 1st baseman should offensively and his defense is meh. And our farm isn't as bad as it's made out to be in the media. Josh Thole should be splitting time with Omir Santos next year (Schneider is gone) but probably won't be because our F.O. is retarded (surprise). Jenrry Mejia has top of the rotation stuff IMO and Ike Davis is our future 1st basemen.

Jim, the division doesnt worry you? I mean, the Braves are stacked with great pitching and good young position players, Jason Heyward is going to make a big impact. And the Marlins are just as stakced as the Braves, maybe even more...and theyre only going to be better next year. And the Phillies, while they have bullpen issues, are still a good team and are fairly young.

I think the Mets are going to have a very hard time competing in that division over the next few years.

Let me say it again, there are no good free agent 1B this offseason. Tell me who out of this group you'd rather have than Murphy:

Rich Aurilia

Hank Blalock

Russell Branyan

Miguel Cairo

Frank Catalanotto

Tony Clark

Carlos Delgado

Nomar Garciaparra

Ross Gload

Eric Hinske

Nick Johnson

Adam LaRoche

Doug Mientkiewicz

Kevin Millar

Chad Tracy

Daryle Ward

Dmitri Young

That is about as underwhelming as it gets. The only guy there I would want is Laroche. Murphy is a much better hitter than most of those guys, and he only had two really bad months hitting. The kid is 24 years old, just finished his first major league season, and he finished the year hitting .285 in August and September. He definitely struggled at times, but giving up on him now would be too soon. He did hit 37 doubles in under 500 ABs with 11 homeruns. Next year as the everyday 1B I would expect to see those numbers grow into something like 45-50 doubles, which would put him among the league leaders, and about 15 homeruns. If we get a big bopper for left, Beltran has a rebound year at the plate, with Francouer and Wright, that is plenty of power,

If you look at it, other than batting average, Murphy had a very similar year hitting to David Wright. And Murph had 42 fewer ABs. If Ike Davis is our future at 1B (and I agree with that notion), then I have no problem with Murphy being the stop gap until he's ready, which is probably at least one more full season.

No, you have to get your own house in order, then worry about the division. Every year I here about how the Marlins are going to be better and every year it turns out to be more hype than anything else. Early this season the pundits said that the Marlins had the best starting pitching staff in the NL. They are stars in April and May but they don't last. I'm not going to point out the flaws in other teams though because the Nationals just swept the Mets and if the season was 1 week longer the Mets would probably have 100 losses. But just saying that if the hitters we have stay healthy and hit the way we know they can, it can certainly be a big rebound from this season. But the Mets do need a good free agent starter,

John Lackey is a free agent along with some risky plays like Bedard, Sheets, Rich Harden, and Jason Jennings. I would even consider Randy Wolf. There are a fair amount of quality free agent starting pitchers out there, and the Mets need to not miss in signing at least one of them.

But there are gettable 1st basemen- Adrian Gonzalez, for instance. I would love him for the Giants but he just might want the east coast spotlight after playing in san obscurity, ca.

too bad the mets dont have the trade chips to land Adrian Balboa, let alone Adrian Gonzalez.
