Will Hill fails another drug test, could be facing year-long suspension

Will Hill, the Giants safety who has received drug-related suspensions each of the past two seasons, has apparently failed another test. According to a person familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely on the matter, the team has been informed of the misstep.

It is unclear if Hill failed for performance enhancing drugs like he did in 2012 (Adderall), or if he failed for drugs like he did in 2013. Hill has been candid about his use of marijuana and its calming effects on his mind.

Either way, he could be facing a more significant suspension. He will appeal.

Hill was arrested toward the end of the 2013 season for being delinquent on his child support payments. When police pulled over a car he was riding in, they detected an odor of marijuana and found cigar shavings all over the vehicle, "suggesting that marijuana was prepared and smoked in the vehicle."

It was the latest in a long line of missteps for Hill, quite possibly the Giants' most athletically gifted defensive player, but also one of their most troubled.

The news makes the signing of both Quintin Demps even more crucial for the Giants. Originally thought of as a return specialist, Demps had a heavy role in the Chiefs defense last year at safety, and could slide into that spot if Hill misses any significant time.

Hill, a St. Peters Prep graduate and former Star-Ledger player of the year, started nine games last season, registering 60 tackles and two interceptions.

The Giants currently have a glut of safeties, though, after re-signing Stevie Brown to a one-year deal. Brown, Antrel Rolle, Demps and Cooper Taylor make up the unit.

Will Hill likely 'done' with Giants as safety faces another drug-related suspension

Giants safety Will Hill has been on the run from drug trouble for years, but after his latest violation of the league's drug policy he may have run himself right out of the NFL.

Will Hill, the troubled but talented Giants safety, is facing a drug-related suspension for the third straight year -- and this time it will likely cost him his Giants career.

Hill, 24, failed a recent drug test, according to multiple NFL sources and both he and the Giants have been informed of the results. Hill is planning to appeal those results, one source added, in the hopes of avoiding what could be a year-long suspension.

Whether he wins the appeal or not, though, one team source added that the Giants are livid at Hill’s continued drug issues and he’s likely “done” with the team, whether he wins his appeal or not.

It’s unclear whether Hill’s latest violation was for a Performance Enhancing Drug – like it was in 2012 when he claimed he failed for taking Adderall – or for other drugs – like in 2013 when he admitted he had been smoking marijuana. It’s also unclear when he failed the test, and whether it was related to his arrest last December for not paying child support. The police report from that incident reportedly noted the smell of marijuana coming from his car.

If Hill’s failed test was for marijuana or another recreational drug – as some suspect – he could be in line for a suspension of six games or up to one calendar year, depending on what stage of the drug program he's in under the NFL's substance abuse policy. If he violated the PED policy again, his suspension would be for eight games.

The Giants are not allowed to comment on Hill’s latest trouble -- which was first reported by Fox Sports and the Newark Star-Ledger -- according to the rules of the NFL’s confidential drug policy. Neither Hill nor his agent could be immediately reached for comment.

None of this is surprising to anyone who has followed Hill’s troubled career, dating back to his days as a highly-touted high school star in New Jersey. His troubles followed him to the University of Florida and into the NFL draft where concerns about his character were so intense that he wasn’t drafted and then wasn’t even signed.

The Giants took a chance on him in 2012 and his talent made him a hidden gem, but he couldn’t stay out of trouble. He admittedly failed “a lot” of drug tests during his rookie season, and the next spring spent time in treatment centers in Boston and Parsippany, N.J., at the urging of the team. Several times coaches publicly expressed concern about Hill, though the team continued to stand by him.

After his suspension was announced last season, Hill said he spoke to Tom Coughlin – who admitted he was “disappointed” – and others in the Giants’ organization. “I talked to my team and they just told me to keep moving forward and keep being positive,” he said last summer. “Just don’t have any more mishaps.”

Now that he’s had another, it seems unlikely the team will stand by him again.

I did say I wanted to keep Mundy over Hill before the season ended. Since that didn't happen we should draft ourselves the best safety in the draft. Come on guys, get on the HA HA Clinton-Dix bandwagon before its too late. Name like that, we GOTTA DRAFT THIS KID.

This is the Giants fault

All he did was listen to them.

Another case where a guy thinks he's above the law...because he's been permitted to be for so long.

I'll never understand how someone can have the world by the balls and just throw it all away.

Look, I like my weed as much as the next guy. But there is a time and place. And if it came down to my job or getting stoned my job wins every time.

What's his draft projection?

Although I must say Safety maybe next year's problem... we really gotta use 2 out of the first 3 pix to draft 2 OLs.

We will likely take the best player available that is non-QB and non-CB (roster limitations). Will Hill is a great talent, but a complete loser. We'll all remember and think what could have been. He let his teammates down and the organization that took a chance on him, all because (presumably) he wanted to get high. What a loser.

especially a job that pays 6 figures... these guys think they can stay young and fit for life... in the NFL especially you have to make the most of what you can get in your short career.

Cooper Taylor - Antrel Rolle - Stevie Brown - FA guy we signed more for KR/PR duties

I don't think safety is necessarily a need this draft. Given Rolle is in a contract year (with a high cap number that likely would not decrease with a new extension or new contract) and Stevie Brown is on a 1-year deal...Cooper Taylor better step up.

Safety is pretty big on the list now. Will Hill was the other starter and Antrel Rolle in the last year of his contract and his next contract won't be here when you consider the numbers. Stevie Brown is coming back this season from an ACL and Cooper Taylor is a bigger question mark.

Safety is still one of the deeper positions on this team this year...unlike say, offensive line or wide receiver. I agree that Rolle is likely done with the Giants after this season...depending on his contract demands. If he realizes he's on the downside of his career and signs a cap friendly deal, maybe he does come back, but I don't see that happening.

For Brown, I think if he has a good season, he will earn a longer-term contract from the Giants.

But, the point is, Taylor has an opportunity to prove himself more than a ST contributor and he needs to prove it this year so that we can hopefully go into next year with a re-signed Brown and Taylor as our starting safeties and address depth there next offseason.
