Giants officials unable to visit Jason Pierre-Paul in hospital

ESPN.com news services

New York Giants officials have come and gone from South Florida without getting the chance to visit injured defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Pierre-Paul suffered injuries to both of his hands, including severe burns and possible nerve damage, in an accident involving fireworks, sources told ESPN on Sunday.

Although the injuries are not believed to be career-threatening, Giants officials traveled to Florida to visit Pierre-Paul in the hospital but never made it out of the waiting room to see him.

The Giants did not ask Pierre-Paul whether they could visit him in the hospital. Team officials flew down on their own to check on him and try to determine how extensive his hand injuries were, but those officials were not welcomed once they arrived.

Pierre-Paul is technically not under contract with the team as he has not yet signed his one-year franchise tender. The deadline for franchised players to agree to long-term contracts is July 15. If a deal can't be reached by that date, Pierre-Paul would have to play under his $14.8 million tender, unless the Giants decide to withdraw it.

Meanwhile, police in Coral Springs, Florida, are no longer investigating Pierre-Paul after determining his fireworks incident did not take place in their jurisdiction.

Although Coral Springs police will not pursue an investigation, Pierre-Paul still could face legal trouble from another jurisdiction in Florida, where fireworks other than those in the sparklers category are illegal without a permit.

The injuries stemming from the incident could affect Pierre-Paul's future with the Giants after the pass-rusher enjoyed one of his best seasons as a pro in 2014. The Giants used the franchise tag on the two-time Pro Bowler.

There is concern that Pierre-Paul's hand injury could force him to miss training camp and the start of the regular season, one team source told ESPN on Monday, but the Giants are still awaiting more medical answers.

Same old shit with this guy....I remember him hurting his back, and instead of shutting him down, the Giants let him play at 60% effectiveness. Instead of getting surgery immediately after the season, he waited until the start of training camp.

Between this player, and this team, just so many dumb moves.

i always get really annoyed when these guys don't get surgery right away too. sometimes there's a good reason, but sometimes these guys just don't want to rehab and recover during vacation time

Look at the breakdown of Suh's deal. it's essentially a 3 year contract and he can be cut in year 4. Without jpp the Giants could have afforded him easily. Suh is a legit stud. He would have made our interior dl absolutely sick and helped out the ends by getting double and triple teamed.... which would also have a cascade effect on the rest if the D. Jpp is a one trick pony who hasn't done jack in years

Exactly what I was going to say. You have to break it down year by year and doing it that way it would only cost roughly $6 million more per year for Suh. Suh only gets $985,000 next year and the contract is backloaded through the last three years when he can be cut

I don't care if he plays sooner than expected, the man is missing an index finger now! I can't imagine that it doesn't impact his ability to tackle and rush the passer...

My big thing is why has he been so secretive with the Giants?

i'd guess that it has something to do with his contract situation/franchise tag but it's not like he rushed to go sign that tender. guess he wants to know everything before they do in case it gives him some kind of advantage

Jessie Armstead is the Giants official they sent. This guy hire armed security? I think if Armstead wanted to make his way through to see JPP, He would make his way through to see JPP
