As it turns out, Jim Harbaugh was Trent Baalke’s second choice to be the 49ers head coach in 2011.

His first choice: Bill Parcells.

Baalke was hired as the 49ers general manager on Jan. 4, 2011, and given the authority by CEO Jed York to hire the head coach. At some point before the 49ers hired Harbaugh on Jan. 7, Baalke approached Parcells about the opening.

That revelation is part of Parcells’ recently released authorized biography, “Parcells: A Football Life,” written by Nunyo Demasio.

At the time, Parcells was 69 and four years removed from his last head-coaching job with the Cowboys. Baalke began his career as a scout with the Jets in 1998 when Parcells was the head coach. Baalke has termed Parcells one of the biggest influences on his career and he still consults with him on personnel matters.

From the book:

“After Baalke secured the job, he quietly tried to lure his first choice for head coach: Bill Parcells. York and Baalke emphasized that although the club had missed the playoffs for eight straight seasons, it contained a talented roster. The 49ers saw Parcells, even at sixty-nine and having been away from the sideline since the 2006 season, as someone who would lead the franchise to the playoffs for at least a couple seasons while sharing Baalke’s vision. But citing his age and the team’s distance from his home base (Jupiter, Fla.), Parcells put an end to any serious discussions. The 49ers turned their attention to the Stanford head coach on so many wish lists.”

Nearly four years later, Harbaugh could, again, be a on a series of wish lists if the 49ers don’t retain him after the season. If so, Baalke’s first choice likely won’t be Parcells, whose age (73) and Florida locale presumably remain deal-breakers.

Parcells, who was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013, did receive interest in 2012 to lead a team on a temporary basis, but he declined the offer. Saints coach Sean Payton asked Parcells if he would fill the team’s vacancy before Payton served a one-season suspension.

Handley was such a terrible time, but I thought Reeves was going to take us places, Fassel, meh!

Handley was George Young's guy......talking about riding the success of other people.....Young let 7 Super Bowls stroll out the door between Parcells, Belichick, and Coughlin.

seeing him in 49er red would've been weird as fuck but even more interesting than harbaugh's been

couldn't be any weirder than Cowboy colors. If Jerry wasn't so crazy, Tuna would've brought him some rings. Instead, he got Terrell Owens shoved down his throat.

Thanks George  For me, those are bad days.

Belicheck wasn't ready to be a HC at that time. See Cleveland. He would've failed miserably at handling LT and Simms- as he did with Kosar. Belicheck couldn't even get the Jets job after Cleveland (well, he had it for 1 day). If anything, Parcells helped him re-establish. If you ask him, he'd tell you Tuna was a mentor.

Belichick without Parcells? Three rings, and two more Super Bowl appearances.

Parcells without Belichick? One playoff appearance, zero wins.

Pretty easy to see who carried whom in that partnership.

this is kind of an oversimplification

Yeah and still see Cleveland after all these years.

I stand by my statement.

Name one playoff game Parcells won without Belichick as his DC.

Parcells' teams weren't bombs away, score 45 points on everyone teams like the Niners were. They were grind the clock and win with defense... BELICHICK's defense.

He talks a good game to be sure... he was a really quotable coach... but the dude did shit without Belichick.

Parcells, Belichick and Coughlin pulled off a virtuoso performance in 1990.....went through the 49ers to beat the Bills....with a fucking backup QB.

There is a reason there are 7 SBs between them....3 great coaches plain and simple

Again, history and facts don't support your statement but feel free to stand by it. Also, Parcells has an excellent coaching tree. As opposed to Belli, whose coaching tree fell in the woods and no one heard .

Here's the problem: history DOES stand by my statement. Zero playoff wins without Belichick... not an opinion, a fact.

We can argue semantics all you want... hell, Jim Fassel had John Fox and Sean Payton in his coaching tree... but for all the quotes and bluster, Parcells didn't have much success without his DC.
