Trachsel takes Mets' hot streak on road

The Mets steamrolled over the competition during their 8-1 homestand, a span in which they tied their franchise record for consecutive home wins and outscored their opponents 61-36. But the best news for the Shea faithful as their team heads west is that they'll start out their roadtrip against the Rockies. The Mets swept the Rockies in that three-game set to start their just-completed homestand, but none of those wins was by more than three runs.

Steve Trachsel, the Mets' leader in wins, gets the nod to open the series. Trachsel has a 4.33 ERA on the road against a 5.68 home mark. With Coors Field's apparent transformation into a pitcher's park, the disparity in Trachsel's split stats may grow even more.

Trachsel pitched well against the Rockies the last time he faced them on Aug. 18. He matched season highs in innings pitched (seven) and strikeouts (six). Trachsel did allow 10 baserunners -- seven by hits and three by walks. But his strikeout-to-walk ratio in that game trumps his season total, which stands at 67-63.

This season, Trachsel has a chance to tie his career high of 16 victories, which he set with the Mets in 2003. But he'll be facing a Rockies lineup more familiar with his repertoire and pitching style. Entering his last start against them, only seven Rockies batters had seen Trachsel -- three of whom were pitchers.

One of those Rockies is their starter Tuesday, Byung-Hyun Kim, who has a hit and and RBI in his career versus Trachsel.

This will be Kim's third career start and 14th appearance versus the Mets, and the sidearming right-hander has decent numbers against them -- a 3.75 ERA and a .202 opponents' batting average but just a 1-3 record. Kim's career home ERA is better than his road ERA, and in no season has the difference been more pronounced than this season. At home Kim has a 3.05 ERA with four homers allowed, but he has a 7.62 ERA with nine home runs surrendered when away from Coors.

Player to watch

New Mets right fielder Shawn Green has the most career at-bats versus Kim and perhaps the most success. Having played in the National League West with both the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, Green has two homers and seven RBIs with a .389 average (7-for-18) off Kim.

Pitching Matchups

Tuesday, August 29 Coors Field | 9:05 PM ET

Steve Trachsel, RHP (13-5, 5.00) @ Byung-Hyun Kim, RHP (7-9, 5.18)

Scouting Report:

No Mets pitcher has as many victories as Trachsel, and only Tom Glavine (26 and 160 2/3) has started more games and/or thrown more innings. The Mets just win when Trachsel starts. Their record in his 25 starts is 18-7. It's 12-2 since June 8. Trachsel has been undone by home runs of late. He has allowed 23 in 140 1/3 innings, including 11 in his last 34 2/3 innings.

One of the reasons manager Clint Hurdle elected to switch Josh Fogg and Kim in the rotation was to give the right-hander a chance to work at night, when his season ERA is just under 1 1/2 runs better than during the day. Hurdle said he would revisit the rotational alignment to prevent future day starts for Kim, who prefers the structure that comes with a night start. He struggled early in his last night start against Milwaukee on Wednesday, though, walking a pair of runners in the first and allowing both to score, then permitting four more runs in the fifth. All told, he allowed six earned runs in five innings, with four walks and two hit batsmen wounding the cause.

Wednesday, August 30 Coors Field | 9:05 PM ET

Dave Williams, LHP (3-3, 6.40) @ Josh Fogg, RHP (9-8, 4.91)

Scouting Report:

Two starts into his tenure with the Mets, Williams has a victory, a no-decision in a victory and a 3.75 ERA. Two of the five runs against him scored after his departure. He kept the Cardinals' injury-diluted order off balance Thursday night, and was one pitch away from a scoreless evening. Gary Bennett hit a two-run home run. Otherwise, he gave the Mets just what they wanted.

Fogg was badgered by the unlikely nemesis of Brewers starting pitcher Tomo Ohka in his Thursday start, allowing the career .130 hitter to go 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Fogg was touched for seven earned runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings, raising his ERA from 4.62 to 4.91, and the Brewers went on to win by a 12-6 margin as the Rockies dropped their sixth straight game. Fogg made the start on extra rest after experiencing tenderness in bullpen sessions.

Thursday, August 31 Coors Field | 9:05 PM ET

Oliver Perez, LHP (2-10, 6.78) @ Jeff Francis, LHP (10-10, 3.53)

Scouting Report:

Perez will make his second start as a Met after a five-innning, five-run performance in his debut. Perez was characteristically wild, walking five (including one to the pitcher) and hitting a batter in a 3-0 count. But he also had his typical good stuff -- a hard fastball and sweeping breaking ball, which is why he struck out seven and gave up only two hits. Four of the runs came on a Ryan Howard grand slam, which is no crime, but Perez has to limit his baserunners and be more efficient than in his last game when he threw 95 pitches.

Francis struggled with his location early in Friday's game against the Padres, yielding five runs on 52 pitches in the first two innings. He turned it around in the following four innings, facing just one batter over the minimum and holding on for the win despite never finding his breaking ball. The five runs were the most Francis had alllowed in over two months.

Mets Notes

RHP Pedro Martinez begins rehab on calf, toe, hip, and stamina in St. Lucie, Florida.

LHP Tom Glavine may make his return from a blood clot on September 1, 2006, against the Houston Astros.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Jose Reyes is the first player to have more than 15 triples in consecutive seasons since Yankees 2B Snuffy Stirnweiss had 16 in 1944 and 22 in 1945

By not making an error in yesterday's game, the Mets extended their errorless streak to a season-high 10 games, their longest since a 12-game streak in 1999.

Since returning to the Mets on July 3, John Maine has started nine games, during which the team is 7-2.

Cliff Floyd was scheduled to play in a rehab game for Single-A St. Lucie in Florida last night. However, he was missing from the lineup. According to a variety of reports, Floyd is again expected to play for St. Lucie tonight. The buzz from St. Lucie is that Floyd pulled himself from the start, preferring to play tonight, instead. Regardless, most people still expect him to join the Mets in Houston this weekend.

Watch Matsui totally destroy us tonight. Like, a walkoff homerun against Wags or some shit like that.

That would probably be his 3rd homer of the game and he robbed 4 hits from us.

Ugh, I can see it clearly.

And Dave Williams throws up a 0 to counter :LMAO: Just what we needed, a fill in who can keep us in games. Gret pickup Omar! :TU: Omar for Executive of Year :worshippy:

Every move he's made this year has helped this team, even the ones that supposedly went under the radar. He's the man.
