Giants tight end Daniel Fells remains hospitalized with methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), sources have told NJ.com. MRSA is a kind of staph bacteria that is resistant to many of the antibiotics used to fight against other, more common, staph infections. Doctors discovered staph while working on Fells' injured ankle and foot over the weekend when he was held out of the team's game against the Buffalo Bills. MRSA infections commonly occur in people who have been in hospitals and other medical care facilities for long periods of time and can be spread by skin-to-skin contact. (Photo: Ted Hyman, 247Sports) The Giants were proactive on that front Tuesday, taking precautions against the possible spread of the bacteria, hiring cleaners to scrub their locker rooms, meeting rooms, and training room. "We are working with infectious disease specialists, and we have defined protocols that we are following in consultation with the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network and local infectious disease specialists," team spokesman Pat Hanlon said in a statement. "Those protocols are being followed carefully." The Redskins, Browns, and in 2013 most famously the Buccaneers, have dealt with the spread of MRSA among their players. Former Giants and Bucs kicker Lawrence Tynes' career ended after he became seriously ill with the infection. "It was very unfortunate with Daniel," head coach Tom Coughlin said on Monday. "It went from early in the week being a junkie ankle to a serious situation. He's just looking forward to getting things under control so he can get out of the hospital." Fells has been hospitalized for more than a week as he battles a persistent Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection that necessitated being placed in the Intensive Care Unit on Friday. He's since been moved to a private room to have a nurse focus solely on his care. Fells has had five surgeries, according to a person with knowledge of his condition. More are coming, as doctors try to stave off further infection. As of Saturday night, they were fighting to save his foot, which is at risk given the nature of the infection. He was placed on Injured Reserve this week, and it remains to be seen if he'll ever play again. The situation arose, the source said, when Fells suffered a toe injury, then an ankle injury. To treat it, Fells was given a cortisone shot. After a week of ankle and foot pain, Fells' wife took him to the emergency room on Oct. 2 with a 104-degree temperature. There, they found his ankle was infected with MRSA, a dangerous staph infection that is resistant to many antibiotics. With doctors hoping to avoid amputating his foot, the more urgent fear is that the MRSA has gotten into the bone and that it could travel into his blood. That could have the gravest of consequences. Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon said "this is a serious situation that has been taken seriously from the beginning. We're all fighting for Daniel." In fact, several Giants officials have visited Fells, including GM Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin. As a team, the Giants have also reacted, working with infectious disease specialists earlier in the week, and these experts defined protocols to follow in consultation with Duke Infection Control Outreach Network and others locally. Their locker room, training rooms and meetings rooms were scrubbed and sanitized and players were briefed on precautions and how to prevent the spread of MRSA. Meanwhile, Fells remains away from the team, waging his own fight. This is unbelievable. Hope he recovers. This season might have a body count. Or multiple amputations. High School wrestling competitions were a huge source of infection. It was big news in the City and the surrounding areas for months back in 2009 to 2011... then they got it under control... but every now and then an outbreak. Yeah I remember a mini outbreak around here, specific attention was made at high school wrestling matches. The hospital had it run through pretty bad around the time you mention.
