Pass interference now reviewable

I am really not sure how I feel about this.... yes it would fix the play against the Saints... BUT how many plays will it fuck up, the whole concept of letting them play kind of goes out the window.

What is really needed is a video official who has direct communication with the officials on the field. The guys on the field can quick ask him to confirm their call, or guy in the booth can ping the guys when they see something missed.

The problem with the whole non call slope, is they want to expand this rule to things like roughing the passer, holding, etc.

There's penalties on every play missed by the refs, you could just wait for a game winning play, throw a challenge flag and say "find me something that sticks" lol

They still have only two, potentially three challenges, so Im not sure I buy the whole concept of this taking away the human element of just letting them play.

Im waiting for the whole Brees and Manning (he does it a lot) underthrow into double coverage to draw PI to be outlawed.

More commercial time, game delays, controversy...boredom. Really looking forward to the opportunity of a new CBA after the 2020 season so the NFL can get the focus back on more training camp time and player instruction so we can watch a better product on the field. Still would like to see an expanded roster on game day, during the season and practice squad.

Again, the challenge rules havent changed, they still only get 3 max. It doesnt and cant possibly impact the flow of the game. Its exactly the same. What youve said is completely false.

Not necessarily, the rule change allows for the eye in the sky to call reviews on non calls/calls as well in the final two minutes, that is off ball pass interference, it doesn't even have to occur where the ball is passed.

If expanded further another year, they are looking at a sky judge to be able to call penalties down onto the field during regular game time as well.

I love the idea of a sky judge... if it takes away from challenges and takes away from the on field officials from reviewing things on a screen.

Fine, but Id rather get it right under two minutes when the coaches cant challenge, same as completed catches, down by contact, etc.

Of course it changes the game and it is a rule change, the NFL is confirming that this is a rule change and not the same thing. You are confusing the number of challenges with what can now be challenged under the new rules.

It will have an impact.

You said it will slow down the game. Thats not true. Coaches can force stoppage at most three times a game to challenge a play. There could be 15 PIs, only three, if two are successful, can be challenged. The coaches still have to decide when and where a challenge is warranted. It is only possible, outside of under two minutes, to stop the game up to 6 times for coaches challenges; just like it is now. You arent going to see 6 challenges a game; youll see probably 2-3 at most. Just like it is now. They could change every penalty to be challengeable and as long as coaches each have, at most, 3 challenges per game, it cant possibly slow the flow of the game because having to be right on the first two and losing a time out of you arent, inherently ensures that coaches are selective of what they challenge and how often theyre challenging.

It will slow down the game as well. There were over 300 pass interference calls in 2018 and now we can review those as well instances when it should have been called in this pass happy league. Coaches are going to be more inclined to challenge pass interference or lack of call because of the greater benefit if it succeeds. I think we are going to see more successful challenges in 2019.

Pass interference calls are not the same as determining ball placement after a runner is down or a receiver's feet were in-bounds on a catch. Pass interference is very subjective by every referee crew in the NFL.

So youre saying every game is going to use up 6 challenges?

I could see the coaches using up both of their challenges by the end of the game.

On average PI is called twice a game in the NFL, not to mention the number of times it happens a game that it is not called.

A coach could very easily use a flag he would normally reserve, this is extra true when there is a blatant PI non call that would benefit his team.

Not to mention this wont be guess work for a coach, his staff could very easily see a non called PI, radio down, challenge the play, penalize the other team and get an extra challenge to boot.

Here's a thought though, can both coaches now challenge the same play?

Since we are now allowing non calls to be reviewed?

For example, WR makes a catch on the sideline, the team on defence figures there's enough proof he did not get his feet in bounds, so they challenge the play.

On the other side of the field however, the offence sees that one of the CBs grabbed and held their man going away from the play on another route, but wasnt called PI.

Can they throw a flag on the exact same play?

I'm saying we are going to see more challenges and more successful ones. We might even see a game with 6 challenges this year, can't think of a game that has happened.

Agreed.

Also, with the state of technology...particularly GPS.....they could wire a grid around the field and put a chip in the ball and we could get way from this stone age chain gangs, bad spots and literal guessing games on "breaking the plain".

Its a game of inches Refs literally measure with their feet at times...

Hey.. the old fashioned chain measure is very dramatic... just how we like it. Get off my lawn. :rules:

The thing that's going to really be a bear is what do you do on things like Hail Mary passes, where literally every defender is interfering.

Also on replays, what is going to constitute interference? There is a lot of hand fighting and barring that happens that is frequently not called.

It's going to take two years or so to get everything straightened out, but at the end of the day PI should at least be reviewable.
