Remember the hand wringing last draft over Randy Gregory?

So substance abuse is separate from Performance Enhancement Abuse? Interesting...

Yup. Lower threshold for punishment for substance abuse, and the NFL tries to help these guys get it together. PEDs is an immediate drop of the hammer, though. And yeah, he's already pissed hot 4 times. Amazing, right? Guy cares more about getting high than financial security and his career. If he's pissed hot 4x in one year, only a matter of time before a fifth positive.

So....how does Josh Gordon get suspended a year for alcohol and Randy Gregory gets to mess up four times with actual illegal drugs and gets only four games?

Because Gordon pissed hot on an existing probation for multiple previous infractions.

From what I see, he's already failed more drug tests than Gordon. The other way around.

Gordon was suspended an entire year for testing positive for a legal substance. In the offseason. People who get one dwi aren't required to abstain from alcohol for some arbitrary amount of time, why should Gordon lose his livelihood for an entire year? Meanwhile, Randy Gregory tested positive for actual illegal drugs on four separate occasions and misses four games? That's horseshit.

Dude, they didn't suspend Gordon for one offense. That means Gordon failed four tests to get his first suspension too. Then fucked up at least twice more (he was coming off ANOTHER one year suspension before the SECOND one year suspension).

On June 7, 2013, the NFL announced that Gordon would be suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season due to violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

- so he pissed hot four times in his rookie year too

On August 27, 2014, Gordon acknowledged that the NFL suspended him for one year for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.[20] On September 19, 2014, his suspension was reduced to 10 games amidst the new NFL drug policy. Gordon was officially reinstated on November 17

- so he pissed hot again, at least once.

As of January 2015, Gordon faced another year-long suspension due to testing positive for alcohol use.[23] Gordon entered the NFL's substance abuse program after pleading guilty to a driving while impaired charge in September 2014 and was prohibited from consuming alcohol during his time in the program.[24] Gordon was officially suspended for one year on February 3, 2015 and won't be able to return until the start of the 2016 season

- so he violated the probation conditions from the FIRST year-long suspension.

The rules were different then.

And the shakedown of Josh Gordon is the reason for that.

You gather that he failed 4 drug tests to miss 2 games? I figured that was one failed test...I'm pretty sure the rules have changed.

In 2014, he failed another and missed 10 games (reduced from a season long suspension).

And I was under the impression that the "probation" imposed was a league-mandated agreement. Not a court-ordered one. I don't really understand how the league can dictate whether or not he consumes a legal substance, in the offseason, mind you; I honestly doubt that any other employer could dictate that. And then suspend him an entire season for it.

Regardless, Gregory failed four drug tests. And misses a mere 4 games?! Insane. And if he fails again, he misses a whopping 8?! The new substance abuse policy is apparently super player-friendly. How many more times can he mess up before he actually gets a year long suspension?

Oh, and his initial two-game suspension was for taking cough syrup with codeine in it. Commonly prescribed.

...and commonly abused. I doubt they put him in a drug treatment program for taking a prescribed cold remedy.

Yeah I don't think Gordon pissed hot 4x in his rookie year... that was 2012 and he played in all 16 games. In 2012, you were suspended prior to 4 failed drug tests. And he played in 13 games year 2. And they had a quicker hook for suspension then as well as much lower thresholds for THC in the system, thresholds so low it was ridiculous.

Excerpt from

THC threshold raised

The revised THC standard was a point of emphasis of the NFLPA. Previously, the NFL's threshold for THC was 15 nanograms per millimeter, which is significantly lower than the standard set by the World Anti-Doping Agency for Olympics competition (150 ng/mL) and the United States government (50 ng/mL). The league's new policy would raise the testing threshold to something along the lines of more common standards.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon would have avoided a season-long suspension if the NFL's adjusted THC threshold had been in place when he was drug tested this offseason. Gordon reported an "A" sample of 16 ng/mL and a "B" sample of 13.6 ng/mL. Unluckily for Gordon, based its ruling on the "A" sample and the "B," but both samples tested well below the league's new standard.

It's unknown how many fewer suspensions would have occurred had the NFL had been operating with these levels in the past, but the expectation is that player infractions because of marijuana will decrease.
