Reyes... Thyroid

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Jose Reyes has been shut down because of thyroid imbalance and will return for New York for further testing, the team said Friday.

The Mets shortstop was cleared to play after seeing a doctor in Florida on Thursday but was scratched from the starting lineup Friday morning after Mets team doctors in New York expressed concern about his blood work. Reyes will be examined Monday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Located in the front of the neck, the thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy and other chemical processes. Reyes said he felt fine and was surprised by the test result, which he said indicated an overactive thyroid.

"This is important, more important than baseball right now," Reyes said. "We're not talking about my leg. Nothing like that. We're talking about my health. That's even worse. I have to be concerned about it."

It wasn't immediately clear how playing would put Reyes at risk, but Mets general manager Omar Minaya said the team was just being careful.

"He would love to be playing, but I think it's better to be cautious," Minaya said. "It's early spring. ... It's different than it would be in season."

Reyes will not do any conditioning exercises or baseball activities until he is cleared to play by doctors. That might not happen until Wednesday because the results of Monday's exam could take up to 48 hours to get back, according to a Mets spokesman.

With the Mets playing on the road Wednesday, Reyes is unlikely to make his Grapefruit League debut before Thursday, when the Mets host the Red Sox. But it is hard say with any certainty when Reyes will play again.

Coming off surgery to repair a torn right hamstring tendon last fall, Reyes had an encouraging day Monday when he played in the Mets' intrasquad game. He hit the first pitch he saw for a two-run triple, and with that, he was back. Or so it seemed.

But Reyes was scratched from the Mets' exhibition opener Tuesday -- along with David Wright, Jason Bay and Luis Castillo -- because the field was wet from morning rain. And he was scratched from the lineup Thursday because he had to see a doctor here for a follow-up exam related to his thyroid levels.

After that doctor cleared him to play, Reyes was set to play Friday. But that plan was scrapped as well.

"I had already walked out to stretch," Reyes said, "and (trainer Ray Ramirez) called me and said, 'No, man I don't think you're going to play today. I think you're going to go to New York.'"

Seriously.. Thyroid imbalance?

I don't think that's a serious ailment. It's kind of a take a pill and live with it thing.

Neither was a pulled hamstring. My money is on this muthafucka ends up with Gigantism and never turns another double play in his life
