Mara: "Pointless to wait any longer"

A disastrous 2-10 campaign led to a rare midseason overhaul for the New York Giants, who fired coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese on Monday.

Co-owner John Mara said the team felt a shift in gears was unavoidable after meeting Steve Tisch following Sunday's loss in Oakland.

"We agreed wholesale that changes needed to be made to this organization to get us back to the team we expect to be," he said. "We also agreed that it was pointless to wait any longer to make these changes."

Mara said both interim general manager Kevin Abrams and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo are both candidates for full-time positions. He added that ex-Giants GM Ernie Accorsi will be a consultant on the search.

Mara said the GM search would begin immediately and "in all likelihood" that position will be named before a head coach.

Less than a month after issuing a statement that the team would make no changes to the coaching staff until after the season, the Giants pulled a U-turn Monday.

"I changed my mind, we changed our minds," Mara said of reversing course. "Given all the events that have occurred, where we are as a franchise right now. To be honest with you, it became more and more apparent that we were going to have to do something at the end of the season. So we talked after the game and again this morning about why prolong it any longer. Why not just get it done now? I'm very conscious of the fact that three of our last four games are at home. I was conscious, having lived through it before, of what the reaction was going to be. It also gives us somewhat of a tactical advantage, allowing us to start looking at general managers right now rather than waiting to the end of the season."

While Mara suggested the 2-10 record was the main reason for the firings, one event -- to use his word -- that had to have played a role was the benching of two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, how it was handled, and the fan reaction.

Mara confirmed Monday that the idea to play Geno Smith and Davis Webb came from McAdoo, but said he approved the move.

"I signed off on that..." Mara said explaining the process that led to Manning missing his first start in 210 games. "You ought to stop blaming Ben and Jerry on that, if you want to blame anyone on that, blame me. I certainly had the power to overrule it if I wanted to. I chose not to do it."

Mara said there has been no decision from Spagnuolo on whether Manning will start Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys.

After an 11-5 season in 2016, the Giants spiraled due to poor play, injuries and a roster lacking depth. The implosion on the field, coupled with the handling of Manning's situation off it, led the Giants to make their first midseason firing since 1976.

"It's really been a perfect storm this season," Mara said. "Everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong so far this season. It's just one of those things you just have to live through, and suck it up, and make whatever changes you have to make and go on."

He was on Francesa today and when he was asked about not fixing the o-line his answer was that we went 11-5 with that o-line. He also clearly didnt want to fire Reese because theyre friends. I wonder if the commish will step in and hire a George Young for them again

I'm still surprised by this massive fuck up from ownership.

You hired some jabroni with zero head coaching or even any sort of head coaching experience at any fucking level.

What the fuck did they expect?

He was the next Walsh?

Fucking stupid decision then and I'll go down as one of the dumbest front office moves in recent memory.

I think calling it a massive fuck up by ownership to be a bit harsh.

IMO they should have fired Reese when they fired Coughlin if they absolutely had to fire people. I really think we would be in the playoffs now if Reese had retooled the team for Coughlin and there was a push for help on the offensive line.

It was not clear in McAdoo's first year that he would fail, he wildly succeeded by record alone. The win-loss record hid fatal flaws that killed the team in McAdoo's second year. Many fans were convinced by the win record McAdoo was the guy even if the scoreboard didn't reflect it.

I thought we should have cleaned house and gotten rid of Coughlin and Reese the same year (three years ago actuall), but many on this board said "we'd be the Cleveland Browns." Instead the team went half-assed and we currently have two more wins than the Cleveland Browns.

Coughlin is enjoying success in Jacksonville but they're a little more than half a season in. At this point last season many of us were bubbling over Reese and McAdoo's success, so let's not go crazy with King Coughlin's reign just yet.

Blowing things up is the best thing for the organization, but Mara inspires little faith in me. The way the past 5-6 years have been handled make me think that the Giants may be in the garbage for a long time. He's selfish, he's indecisive, he sells others up the river for what look like his own mistakes. I'm not a fan.

Lets also not forget that a guy with 0 executive and player personnel experience is getting 100% credit for Dave Caldwells results with the jags. My guess is he was big on marrone, but that team has been building for a couple of years and wouldve made a jump last year if Bradley was a decent coach

And Im totally with seph on that last paragraph. Ive really soured on Mara since the coughlin firing. It reeked of know-it-allism and arrogance to sacrifice coughlin but keep literally everyone else and then try to fool the fans by selling it like it wasnt a termination.

Lets not ever forget that mcadoo was HIS hand picked guy.

I don't buy the selfish and indecisive.

Mara could have hung the Eli Manning benching entirely on Reese & McAdoo, instead he steps up and takes the blame for not telling them to keep Eli Manning the starter.

John Mara & Steve Tisch are similar to their fathers in having a hands off approach to the team and it is commendable. Can you imagine the both of them having the ego of Jerry Jones and tinkering with the team?

I understood their desire to maintain continuity, we have had success. It does however require a house cleaning to become the team Mara envisioned: One that competes regularly.
