Doctors Shut Down David Wilson; Career Over

Career is over.

The smile and the hope never faded from Giants running back David Wilson’s face, even if on some level deep down inside he knew what might be coming.

Wilson, the talented and young 2012 Giants first round pick who suffered a burner last week in practice, was advised by his doctors this morning to cease playing football.

“Dr. Frank Cammisa Jr., our spine specialist at (Hospital for Special Surgery), examined David this morning and following that exam, we both sat down and shared our perspective with David,” said Dr. Russell Warren, the Giants’ team physician in a statement released by the team.

“David has diffuse cervical stenosis. He had a disc removed and a fusion in January. In light of last week’s episode of symptoms, sensory and motor, Frank and I both told David he should not play football any more. We let David know that by playing, he would be putting himself at risk for more episodes like last week or perhaps something more serious. ”

The news, while unfortunately, doesn’t really come as a surprise. Wilson was a little more than six months removed from having spinal fusion surgery and was surprisingly cleared by doctors to return to contact drills at the start of training camp.

Wilson, who was also diagnosed with spinal stenosis, always ran the risk of taking a hit that might aggravate his condition.

Last month, when he shared the good news about having been cleared, Wilson, who has insisted he’s always been pain—free, said he had “no real concerns” moving forward.

“I’m just excited, most definitely. I’m ready to get back out there and compete,” he said, adding that the doctors didn’t require any special equipment or medication as a condition for his return. “I love competition so I haven’t been sitting on the couch.”

However, Wilson now seems to have accepted that his once promising NFL career is over.

“I don’t want anybody to feel sorry for me, or pity me,” said Wilson in a team-issued statement. “I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too.

“I’m thankful that I can literally walk away from the game and that I am healthy and capable of doing the same things I have done all my life, except play football,” said Wilson. “I always try to find the positive in everything. This morning when I saw Dr. Cammisa and Dr. Warren, I didn’t hear what I wanted to hear, but I expected that what they told me could be a possibility. I had played out both scenarios in my mind. I prayed this morning before I went to see them that they would tell me what God would tell me. He put His answer in them to relay to me.”

Wilson met with head coach Tm Coughlin, general manager Jerry Reese and team co-owner John Mara following his doctor’s appointment at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

“The whole idea for David is that he fulfilled his dream,” said Coughlin. “Even though his career was cut short, he remains positive and believes God has a plan. He has accepted this in such a way that is a great example for all of us. There is no self-pity. David is a strong person and extremely optimistic. He will meet his next challenge in life with the same enthusiasm he approached football.”

Wilson will be placed on season-ending Injured Reserve by the Giants. He will not require any more surgery or treatment as a result of the burner he suffered last week during practice.

David Wilson isn't retiring, technically. He will be placed on IR so he will still be paid the $997,682 salary he's owed for 2014.

sounds like giants doing him a solid.

Yeah I mean he basically gave and ended his career to the Giants.

I mean if anything that O-line from last year should be paying for everything Wilson should be going through.

it's nice, not sure they had much choice, but they probably would have done this even if they had a choice. Invest wisely, David.

I thought he would be a really special player. It's unfortunate as a fan because the opportunity lost to see a rare talent blossom and reach his full potential with your team. Same thing with Hakeem Nicks to a much lesser degree. In Nicks' case, he was poised to become the best NY Giants' receiver ever. Now he is trying to rehab (pun intended) his career with the Colts. But for David, he never really got his career off the ground and we all lose because of it. At least he has some financial security if he's smart with his money, and I think he will be. He's an intelligent guy with a bright future with whatever he decides to do next. I wish him the best of luck and Godspeed.

Good luck to David Wilson and thank you Jerry Reese for drafting Andre Williams.

Agreed on both counts.

Still can't believe the NCAA rushing leader was still around in the 4th round. What a huge value pick that was.
