Having a tough time finding the silver lining in this draft.

We entered the draft weak on the OL and at LB (of course), and needed to get more physical at the TE position. The draft was also deep at DB and TE with lots of value available late.

We took the least physical of the day 1 tight ends, passed on a 3 down linebacker to draft our 4th best D-lineman, and took a developmental QB instead of quality depth on the OL, TE, or at DB.

I'm really not trying to be a Debbie Downer but there's sure not much I like about this draft.

I am the opposite. While I agree the oline needs addressing and I was hoping for an early round tackle, I love this draft. I love the Evans pick. I think the dt in rd 2 was smart, keeps the interior dline strong. And like it or not, we needed to address the future of the QB position. Eli might play another 5 years, and we're all expected 3 more at a high level. But he could also be trending down and be the starter for the NY Giants for 2 years. A qb that knows the score and is a willing student that has most of the tools might make this a smooth transition.

Not as pumped for the RB pick. When I first heard he was a big thunder style back I was excited, but I have been reading he may have some hesitance at the los.

Obviously different people have different opinions... drafting isn't an exact science but those who do the draft do this for a living....

My conversation with Jim went like this:

Jim: who do you like for Gmen tonight? (Thursday night)

Me: A TE. Our O needs a spark.... I do see us picking a QB in the later rounds. I think I mocked the kid from Cal.

And we thought OT or DT was a need...

Why I dont put much stock into drafts;

Your lucky to have a single player from a draft on your team after a few years, as evident by the countless articles posted on this board leading up to the draft.

None of us are professional football execs.

The team was one more playmaker on offense away from being able to make a push in the playoffs.

People act like we need a LB, which as evident by last years defense, we dont, if anything we need to find away to put more pressure on the QB since guys like Rodgers had a whole year to throw on the Gints.

I put a lot more weight on the first couple of rounds and I love both picks so I'm happy. The general consensus was that this draft sucked with o-line. I'm more annoyed at basically ignoring that in free agency than the draft

That being said;

Engram is gonna start day one and he's gonna be a nightmare for any team. People want to bitch about how TEs are gonna be having a field day with our defense but just think about the field day Engram is gonna have when teams have to worry about OBJ, Marshall and Shepard (who had one of the better rookie WR seasons). Fuck the Cowboys and Witten, the Gints and Engram are gonna be known for slashing teams in the NFC East.

Tomlinson is a need and an immediate starter, he comes in and not only continues to improve the 3rd ranked run defense, but he plays mean, and smart. Plus he can push the pocket which was sorely needed.

Webb, I don't like it but it's an investment, instead of having to spend a pick later the Giants spend it now.

Gallman, was a steal, dont know why he fell but he'll push for time in the running back committee that MacAttack likes to run, plus I'm not sold on Perkins. I like this pick more than Williams back when he was drafted.

Moss, no idea about but sounds like a high motor, high ceiling guy who just needs to get it together, it's perfect for him to be able to learn from guys like JPP and Vernon while playing special teams. If he doesnt develop so what it's a fifth round pick.

Bisonwhatever, from what I hear could of been an easy second round pick but couldnt stay healthy, might be a starter one day just needs to stay on the field. Once again no loss if he doesnt develop.

But, but, but.....that's because the wideout trio went on a boat trip and then warmed up in shorts topless.

Picks in the first two rounds are the ones that you need to key players on the team. Here's your silver lining:

1 - Beckham, Marshall, Shephard, Engram; good luck defending that.

2 - Dalvin: Hankins, a solid starter, leaves creating a gaping hole on our DL. Dalvin should be able to step in day one and start. To me, the 2nd DT spot was our biggest hole outside of OL, and ahead of LB.

For the rest:

3 - I don't know much about Webb, and I personally preferred an OL here, but I did watch the combine, where I thought Webb looked the best throwing the ball. Check out his YouTube vid against SD State, where he's making accurate, pro style throws +10 and + 20 yards.

4 - Clemson I have seen a lot of. Gallman should be a solid back who brings some tackle breaking ability (that we lack) and plays faster than his combine numbers suggest. If you want to say Darkwa can be a power back, that's fair, but he's also unproven and hasn't been healthy. What sucks is they'll both likely have a poor OL this season.

5 - Moss. No problem with a pass rusher here. Maybe LB is a possibility for him? Or at least sub package, pass rusher.

6 - OL depth, which was lacking.

I disagree that the Hankins loss was a big loss. Hankins was an above-average one-technique, but an average 3-technique. I think he'll once again be a very good one-technique for the Colts but he's not the penetrating, disruptive player a 3-tech needs to be. Dude is a run stuffer, and we already have the best one in the league.

This team hasn't had a QB on defense since the Antonio Pierce days, and I personally think that's much more important than having a 3-technique DT (i'd argue Tomlinson is another one-technique) on a team with JPP, Harrison, and Vernon. Hell, Beason's one healthy year at least kept our defense respectable... those players were bad... and Beason was over the hill. Go back and watch that Green Bay playoff game and tell me how many intermediate routes were caught over the middle in the second half. THAT's why we need a two way middle linebacker. I'd have taken Cunningham in the first; the fact that Reese passed on him in the second just goes to show that he really doesn't value that entire unit.

I like the Engram pick from a flashy standpoint, but not from a physical one... again, he's great at what he does but he does one thing at a position where ideally you do three. In fact, I'm having a hard time figuring out how we got more physical on offense aside from the Vikings TE we signed (Fluker at this point in his career is pretty much a bust). If Ellison sprains an ankle in training camp, who do we have on offense that can block? Last year we lost Will Johnson and never replaced him, and the team acted like blocking FBs and TEs are really hard to find (they're not).

I guess we'll see. I hope we score tons of points but I'm not really seeing how we got bigger or stronger, or how we're going to cover the middle of the field. I'm just not buying this "we're going to be more physical" thing based on this draft, and I like physical Giants teams... and there were lots of tough players out there to be had.

That's the problem though, this isnt a "physical team" anymore like Coughlin.

This is MacAttack team and he's building it the way he wants.

You talk about how Antonio Pierce was a qb of the defense but you forget to remeber that in 2007 the middle of the field was still a weakness, and the Giants were constantly slashed by routes over the middle it's been a problem for the past 15 years. I mean if the Cowboys WRs decided to catch the ball a few more times in that playoff game over the middle we wouldnt be talking about a SB.

Spags was able to cover the weakness but not giving QBs the time to throw.

But here's something it's nothing new in the NFL, this isnt a Giants only problem.

We lost a below average starting DT for a DT who can do what he did and more.

I also dont understand the "if we lose Ellison" stuff, it's football you are going to lose players and very realy a team can cover an injury with someone of the same level.

What happens if Eli goes down? Oh no plan there. What happens if Richburg and Pugh go down, no plan there. What happens of OBJ goes down?

You can play the game for days.

Every team is going to have injuries and it's rare if the backup is an improvement or equal to the guy who he replaced, but I feel like it's odd to say, "if this guy goes down there's no other blocker on the team." In this case I feel it's accurate though.. there'd be no blocking TE. There's no fullback. Physical press defenses may eat us alive (though I do think Marshall is pretty physical too in a different way).

Also, there were players available in this draft that can do both. Lbs that can cover and play the run (Cunningham). TEs that can block and catch (Kittle and Sprinkle).

I agree this is probably the McAdoo system, but I guess I'm just not sure I'm a fan of the system. It's great to have speedy players all over the field but if your QB isn't able to chuck the ball 40 times a game you're going to have a hard time putting points on the board. This team was the 25th ranked offense but they don't look a whole lot different than last year's group.

I'm not sold on the strength of the entire 2017 draft class based entirely on scout ratings. Looks like a weak class and many of them won't be in the league four years from now.

Giants drafted quite a few guys to needs but we never can cover all of them. I think Reese did pretty good overall and looking forward to the preseason.

Not for nothing Temp, but what needs do you think we drafted to? My first 3 in order would have been LB, OL and TE. We got one of those.

I'd love to have someone talk me down from the ledge.

Gallman was one of the guys I was really hoping for the Giants to get. I think he's going to be a perfect fit in the offense. I've seen a lot of him as well. He has decent size, but runs with the violence of a bigger man. What I love about him is he'll run through you. As a Florida State fan, I can tell you he was frustrating for them to tackle, and that FSU defense was really good the last two years up front. He falls forward when he gets hit, always getting that extra yard or two. When he sniffs the endzone, watch out. A lot of production. Ran the ball over 500 times the last two seasons and was physically up to the task. 5.1 career ypc, over 3400 rushing yards and 34 rushing TDs, and he can catch the ball, too. Just a well-rounded RB. He'll remind some of Ahmad Bradshaw with the power he runs with, although he doesn't have the top-end speed that Bradshaw had when he came out. They gave the comp of Devontae Freeman on NFL Network, that is a good comp for him. He's also one of the best pass-protecting backs in the draft. He's very well-rounded, he'll get plenty of chunk plays, very fluid hips with easy agility and acceleration. He is really a great fit for the Giants and will form a fantastic duo with Perkins in the run game. This is not a role player. He can come in and be a workhorse RB if that's what the Giants need from him, and play all three downs. You can give him the ball 25 times a game and he'll produce, and you can trust him to punch it in down on the goal line. This is an outstanding pick in the 4th, and I love that he's a Giant. Everybody loved Kareem Hunt and I think he's just as good as Hunt. He's a major silver lining because the Giants needed a good RB to complement Perkins and Vereen, and they definitely got him with Gallman.

You have Engram, and he's going to really be a mismatch. You get Dalvin Tomlinson to start alongside of Snacks, and that front four is very stout. Dave Te' Thomas said that the Alabama coaches all raved about Tomlinson, moreso even than Allen. With Dalvin Tomlinson, the OL assigned to him better bring a sack lunch and dinner too, because it's going to be a long day. The Giants will get the same effort from him on the first snap as they do with the last snap. He is just relentless and powerful. I'm glad I don't have to block him.

Hopefully Avery Moss will give the Giants what they need as a rotational pass rusher. I watched his game against West Virginia and I didn't see a lot that made me think he will be an impact player in the NFL. It is one game, but I'll start with the bad: I don't see much explosion or quickness off the snap. I didn't see speed or bend around the edge, and I didn't see much of a bull rush. I don't think he'll be a help in the run game as a physical presence. But here's what he does well... he uses his hands very well to shed blocks. I didn't see much from him that I think will translate, but we'll see how he develops under the Giants tutelage.

Bisnowaty, all I know is what I've read on him, big and strong and slow feet, but it seems some of that was due to playing through injury. A lot of guys think he has LT upside. If he can be a long-term fixture at RT or even at a OG spot I'm happy. I do know he was very highly regarded coming into last season and talked about as being one of the best OL in this draft class prior to the year. It sounds like we also got a lot of competition for OL with the UDFA's, so I'm cautiously optimistic. Dave Te' Thomas loves Bisnowaty and I trust his evaluations.

If you get 3 major contributors out of the draft it's a great draft. I think the Giants got at least three with Engram, Tomlinson, and Gallman. So to me, overall, it's going to be fun watching these new players slide in and help the Giants next season.

Giants needed a TE and we got Evans who could be the best of the group in the class and we got him without making a move. Beyond Harrison at DT we don't have another impact player in the group and we have Tomlinson now who should be a solid rotational guy this year, possibly a starter.

I had an order of needs too and QB wasn't third on that list either. By the third round of this draft, I think the talent level dropped off a cliff but time will tell the truth of it.

Our running game is still a weakness and Gallman brings another style to the RB committee. We'll see him on the field this year.

I don't have the same vision of the offensive line that Solari does. Can't dismiss Bisnowaty simply because he could still prove useful as a swing tackle.

Spagnuolo likes his linebackers and he gets a lot out of them. Goodson I think is the ace in the hole.

Don't necessarily feel like we got better this wknd. Maybe we held serve which means it was a C+ draft at best.

I think Engram makes them significantly better because he changes what defenses can get away with against the Giants offense. They threw cover 2 at the Giants all year to contain OBJ last year, and they can no longer do that because Engram will hurt them deep and severely. Gallman also strengthens the effectiveness of the run game, which we all knew needed youth and talent. Gallman gives them both. So I think we got a good deal better on offense.

I think that is potentially true. He doesn't have the size of past Giants TE's yet is significantly faster. Evans is faster than nearly every linebacker in the league, he has to play to that speed and also be harder to bring down than our current TEs. Will Tye goes down easy, but we also rarely run anything more than a five yard crossing route in front of linebackers with him. We can only hope than McAdoo uses Evans better.

No Silver lining??? Not a set of offensive talent that has defensive coordinators already scrambling to figure out how to cover? Plus looking into the not too distant future, Brandon Marshall will not be here for ever...

How about that potentially our D-line is set as a run crusher for the next 4 years, 4 years of having to face Ezekiel Elliot at least twice a season?

Hopefully Geno Smith does not have to take a snap as Quarterback for the NY Football Giants?

A 4th round running back who has a little power to him

A DE who likes to flash his cock at broads... should make for some interesting post game interviews

A mean spirited Olinemam with a name that looks impossible to pronounce....

See lots of silver lining...

i just don't think going into the draft many people said we needed more pass-catchers, D-line, and backup quarterback...
