But sometimes at lower levels you'll see teams come out in wildly varied formations like that, and if the defense isn't confused or aligned right for the particular play, they would just all just move back to a regular formation instead. Lughead Posted October 19, 2015 Share Posted October 19, 2015 It was designed to draw the D offsides Griff Wallen wasn't supposed to snap the ball the "QB" kept mouthing why did you snap it? either Griff flinched and didn't want to get called with a false start or Griff went rouge. The numbers where there for a WR/HB screen with Man on Man blocking. Maybe the OL coach told Griff " IF this Then do That" but Griff got it backwards. Virginia Giant Posted October 19, 2015 Share Posted October 19, 2015 When we ran it in high school, we did it after TD's for the PAT. We'd line up just that way, except with a WR out wide on the weak side of the field. If I remember correctly, out QB was in the shotgun, but I may be mistaken (we're talking 20 years ago). The play is designed to go one of three ways, depending on how the D is lined up. If they don't respect the "huddle" on the strong side, a quick toss to the half back or wr behind the line lets them trot in with a convoy. If they give too much respect to the the huddle, with was usually the case, the qb called the line back to regular formation and we kicked the PAT. However if they get distracted by the huddle and foprget about the WR split out on the opposite side of the field,leaving him uncovered, obviously the qb quick snaps the ball and throws it to him. It worked twice that I can remember, once to the wr that was left all alone, once to the HB behind the line. The QB would assess the defense and call out who the ball was going to, using first names, simple as that. Like I said we only tried it twice and converted both times, even though we used the same formation after every TD. It could have worked for the Colts, but the Pats had the D lined up well. Apparently the issue was that Geathers was supposed to be the center, since he's the gunner, but was injured in the second quarter. Whalen had never practiced this play and it's not in the playbook. Pagano ran the play with a center that basically had no proper knowledge of what to do. This whole play is predicated on the D substituting and getting caught off guard. That didn't happen and, as Herc pointed out, Pagano was basically pants by Belichick. Stupid all around by the Colts on that one. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
CrazedDogs Posted October 21, 2015 Share Posted October 21, 2015 You have to have five guys on the oline right? seven on the line of scrimmage, only the guys on the end are eligible receivers, and they can generally be in any alignment you want. There are a few high school and small college programs that run offenses with three down linemen, and split their offensive tackles out wide. Its a screen based offense.
