My personal ones (and keep in mind, this is based solely on what I read and see on highlight films).

 

Reggie Ragland (I know, I know... but a guy can wish for an NFL caliber LB, right?)

 

Cody Whitehair (he looks like he'd make an awesome guard, but could possibly swing out to RT)

 

A'Shawn Robinson (we never keep our home grown DTs, and Hankins is on the market this upcoming year).

 

I think Myles Jack is intriguing but I don't think I'd pull the trigger on him this high in the second round with other guys with less questions available.

Out of the guys you mentioned, and I'm going to gladly give everyone a glimpse into my process...

 

I like Robinson because he looks like he's in his late 30s instead of just coming out of college.

I like your assessment, and have no disagreements there.

 

I also realize you are talking about what you'd like to see, and not what we should expect.

 

SI has us mocked to take Myles Jack in Round 2 at #40. I don't see that happening at all. I admire Jack's honesty in openly discussing his long term medical prognosis....I'm sure his agent is about to off himself, though. Myles Jack may have a 2-3 year shelf life. But if he's a stud during those 2-3 years, he will have exceeded Jerry Reeses' 2nd round draft record.

Using the same link I could see the Giants going with a QB in Round 2. I could also see them take a WR. You need to just take whatever your opinions are and wipe your ass with them, because Reese blows.

 

Ragland would be the safer choice. Tough linebacker in a meat grinder conference, the Giants cupcake defense is starved for guys like that. He's got Pepper Johnson potential....

 

 

Strengths

Old-school, take­-on middle linebacker who plays the game the way Nick Saban likes. Steps into hole and will swap paint with lead blockers in order to constrict his gap. Instinctive linebacker who trusts his eyes and goes. Showed greater understanding of angles and leverage this year. Won't over-­commit when flowing to ball carrier and almost always finds his run fits. Missed tackles fell from ten in 2014 to just three this season. Played with hand in ground as an edge rusher in some sub ­packages. Showed greater willingness to take chances downhill. Nasty hitter with above average play strength.

Weaknesses

Some scouts question his play speed. Can be inconsistent with his angles when playing downhill. Could get himself in trouble miscalculating NFL speed to the perimeter. Will get locked up more often by pro linemen if he tries to take on all blocks rather than punch and shed. Alabama's outstanding defensive front allowed him to roam unblocked for much of the year. Can handle himself in zone coverage but man cover skills are limited.

Bottom Line

Thumping inside linebacker with throwback size and tone­setting mentality. Ragland is a confident and capable early starter in league who has the temperament to become one of the premier run­-stopping inside linebackers in the pro game. Ragland has some coverage and speed limitations, but his instincts and overall awareness should be able to mask those issues.

Added WR Thomas to my Round 2 wishlist after reading up on him (thanks Jim). Only drawback would be that Keyshawn Johnson might get airtime during Giants games.

 

I still think OT and ILB are the top priorities.

 

1) OT Spriggs

2) ILB Ragland

3) WR Thomas

4) OLB Jack

5) TE Henry

6) DE Spence

If not to the teams in the top 5, but I wouldn't put it past someone to trade up into the top 5 to get him.

 

The other thing to always look out for is the run on 2nd day QBs...which, I just don't see a number of this year...Conner Cook and Christian Hackenberg seem to round out that list. If a team needs a QB, these are the guys. Cleveland could get one to groom behind Griffen, 49ers and Cowboys would both be completely justified going with QBs at the top of the 2nd. Jets even towards the end of the 2nd. I'm not saying these guys are worth 2nd rounders...but shit, can anyone name any of the QBs that fall in after these two without looking them up? Seems to be quite the dropoff after Hackenburg.

Another reason why I'd say no to Jack is that there's a good chance he doesn't even play this year. With a developmental-type first round guy, we can't afford to wait two years for two picks in this draft to come around, unless you're talking about a fifth rounder or something.

I can really only look at the draft at this point by a positional need.

 

Yeah I'd like to see an offensive tackle to bookend the other side of the offensive line. Defensive end is still a concern for the team that needs to put more pressure on the QB. Now we could get a linebacker and this would not be out of character for the team. Wide receiver is the last consideration, Giants tend to put a high value on the position.

It was revealed yesterday before the draft that Ragland has an enlarged aorta, which is why I believe he fell out of the first, and why I removed him from my first round mock.

 

For the 2nd round:

 

Lots of good players left, both the Alabama DT's. Reed is more of a fit than Robinson, who is more of a 1-tech... we have 2 of those guys already, even though Hankins has versatility to play the 3-tech also.

 

Reed can do both, imo.

 

Chris Jones, DT, Mississippi St... one of my favorite players in the draft. EXPLOSIVE burst off the snap. I thought he would sneak into the first round. Gets tons of pressure from the DT position, 3-tech DE, can even play 5-tech in a pinch, position versatility.

 

Michael Thomas was my second favorite WR in terms of fit for the Giants. He is big, enormous hands, very good measurables, and was a mismatch against some very good corners. Didn't put up huge numbers because Ohio State didn't throw that much. I think Dallas covets Thomas and won't be surprised if they take him at #34 overall. But if he's there, he's one of my favorite guys at #40.

 

Ogbah is intriguing but I'm concerned as to why he's dropped this far. Guys his size and profile are supposed to go in the top 20.

 

If you want to definitively take care of the RT position, you may not have a better opportunity than at 40 with Jason Spriggs, if he makes it there. Five offensive tackles have already gone off the board. Spriggs was projected by many as a first rounder. After him you have guys I would be more comfortable in the third, but who might not be there because it's a premium position... Shon Coleman, Le'Raven Clark, and Jerald Hawkins. All of whom are going to need some work, Shon Coleman is probably the best of those three, but Spriggs is better than all three.

 

If you think Whitehair can play RT, then he makes a lot of sense. But he was thought of as the best guard in the draft, although the 49ers didn't agree by trading back into the first to take Josh Garnett.

 

Kevin Dodd has the physical profile the Giants love for DE. I think he's a perfect fit. Put an asterick next to his name, if he's at 40, and it would be crazy if he was, then he almost assuredly has to be the guy, holes at OT and WR aside. Dodd is a force, and I've said before he reminds me in many ways of Strahan. Plays the run as well as the pass.

 

Hunter Henry is a good pass receiving TE but I don't believe is a fit for the Giants, and I prefer Nick Vannett in the third or fourth round if he's there. I think Henry is a good player, but also one of the most over-hyped tight ends I've seen in recent memory.

 

Derrick Henry, love this guy... would love him on the Giants. Big dude but has the agility, vision, and speed to succeed at the next level. I won't be upset if the Giants take him but I don't believe a RB in the 2nd is prudent... the positional value is higher later in the draft with other guys like Dixon, Booker, Alex Collins, and Jonathan Williams.

 

Other wide receivers to watch for: Sterling Shepard, who is probably the best route runner in this class. He is a very safe pick and an impact player. I would love the Giants to draft him, but I see him as a slot receiver, and I'm looking for a bigger guy on the outside. You're going to hear a lot about Tyler Boyd... great hands, non-explosive, possession receiver. Pass, he'll be over-drafted by someone because of the production, but I don't see him getting a lot of separation at the NFL level, and I think won't be an impact guy and might be out of the league in 3 or 4 years.

 

Braxton Miller... I've got a huge man crush on this guy. I think there will be better fits for the Giants at 40, and I don't think he makes it to 71, but man oh man, I think he's going to be a superstar receiver. I'd be awfully tempted to take him at 40 and let the chips fall where they may. Could eventually be the best receiver in the entire class.

 

Von Bell is a guy the Giants have spent a lot of time on. I think they like him a lot. He would be a favorite in terms of who I think the Giants will pick at 40. I wish we could get him in the third, but I doubt he'll be there. He would come in and likely be the starting FS day 1. Very rangey, with ball skills... a little undersized at 5'11".

 

I think the best fits for the Giants at 40 are Dodd, Thomas, Chris Jones, Spriggs, and Von Bell.

The next best fits would be Whitehair, Shepard, Miller, and Ogbah.

If all those guys are gone: Derrick Henry

 

Not a consideration for me: Reed, Boyd, and Hunter Henry,

 

 

Really wish the Giants had 2 second rounders this year, because it seems to me to be a shame that the Giants are likely to only get one of the players in that first group.

There isn't a lot of difference in the talent from the back half of the first round up to pick 40 or so. So we should get a guy that in other years might be a first rounder. Giants can't gamble... the time for your gambling picks this year is in the 4th and later, on Day 3.

I thought for sure someone would trade up into the bottom of the first to get him too...we'll see how far the slide goes.
